🦷 Did you know? Tooth resorptive lesions are one of the most common and painful dental diseases seen in cats

A tooth resorptive lesion occurs when the body's own cells begin to break down and destroy the tooth, often starting below the gum line. As the disease progresses, the tooth can become extremely painful, with parts of it gradually being "reabsorbed" by the body. The exact cause is still unknown, and unfortunately, there is no way to prevent them.

The tricky part? Cats are masters at hiding pain, so many continue eating and behaving normally despite significant discomfort.

Regular dental examinations, dental X-rays, and dental procedures are the best way to detect these lesions early and provide treatment before they cause ongoing pain.

A healthy mouth means a happier, more comfortable cat. 🐱💙

🦠🐱 𝗔𝘃𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝘇𝗮 (𝗕𝗶𝗿𝗱 𝗙𝗹𝘂) 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮 – 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝘁 𝗢𝘄𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄

You may have seen recent news about cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5 bird flu) being detected in wild seabirds in Australia. While the current risk to pet cats remains low, it's important for cat owners to be aware and take a few simple precautions. It can be very serious and potentially fatal to cats. Risk of infection to humans is low, however infected cats may shed the virus.

Can cats catch bird flu?
Yes. Although uncommon, cats can become infected if they:
🐦 Hunt or eat infected wild birds
🪶 Come into contact with sick or dead birds
🥩 Eat raw meat or raw poultry products from infected sources

Signs to watch for include:
🐾 Lethargy or unusual tiredness
🤒 Fever
😮‍💨 Difficulty breathing, coughing or sneezing
🤢 Loss of appetite
🤮 Vomiting or diarrhoea
🚶 Unsteady walking, tremors or seizures
👁️ Sudden changes in behaviour or responsiveness

How can you protect your cat?
✅ Keep your cat indoors where possible.
✅ Prevent them from hunting birds or scavenging wildlife.
✅ Never allow your cat to investigate sick or dead birds.
✅ Avoid feeding raw poultry or wild game.
✅ Contact your veterinarian promptly if your cat becomes unwell after possible exposure to birds.

The good news is that Australia has only detected H5 bird flu in a limited number of wild seabirds, only 1 in QLD currently, with no evidence of infection in commercial poultry or the wider agriculture industry, and authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. The risk to people also currently remains low.

If you see a sick or dead wild bird, please do not touch it. Keep pets away and report it to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
