Three curious terriers found themselves in a dangerous situation after ingesting Nurofen, a common household medication that can be highly toxic to dogs.
Thankfully, their owners acted quickly and sought emergency veterinary care at our 24/7 hospital.
When it comes to medication toxicity, time is critical. The outcome depends on several factors, including how much was ingested, how quickly treatment begins, and how the patient responds to care.
Human medications are one of the most common causes of poisoning in pets. Dogs are often exposed when tablets are accidentally dropped, left on bedside tables, countertops, or in bags within easy reach.
To help keep your pets safe:
• Store all medications securely in closed cupboards or drawers, ideally up high.
• Keep medicines in their original containers.
• Pick up any dropped tablets immediately.
If you suspect your pet has ingested medication or any potentially toxic substance, don’t wait for symptoms to appear. Contact your veterinarian or emergency hospital immediately. Acting fast can make all the difference.
We’re proud to provide 24/7 emergency and critical care services, ensuring pets across North Queensland have access to urgent veterinary treatment whenever they need it most.
