Cayuga Black: The quack you lack

Cayuga Black: The quack you lack Purebred Cayuga Ducks, based at Alligator Creek, just south of Townsville

Ducks lay more seasonally than chickens do. Last year ours started in May so I'm already searching all the usual laying spots in anticipation. Looking forward to the 2026 season, with new nests and scarecrow technology, I reckon we'll beat the crows this year

Cayugas look black at a glance, but theyโ€™re not actually true black. Their feathers are a very dark, beetle-green with a strong iridescent sheen, so in good light they flash green, blue and even purple rather than flat black. On adults, especially drakes, you really see that metallic green over the head, neck and back โ€“ the โ€œblackโ€ is basically a super dark base carrying that glossy, oil-slick colour.

We have a new drake this year so I popped a few eggs in the incubator this week just to check if the girls like him. This is a fertile duck egg at just 5 days development

That's a lot of water

On our farm we have ducks, geese, chickens, cows and dogs (and two humans but we're way less interesting). We've had significant flooding over the weekend but at no point did any of our ducks even care. As they say, great weather for ducks!
