We are a family keeping a small selection of breeding parrots. Parrots are limited to seasonal availability. Hand-raised parrots raised by our family for yours.

Austerity diets aren’t about starvation or denying your birds nutrition—they’re about aligning your parrot’s diet with the natural rhythms of the wild, especially leading up to the breeding season.

In the wild, parrots experience seasonal changes in food availability. Mimicking this natural cycle in captivity supports their health and wellbeing on many levels.

🛑 What we reduce:
During the non-breeding (usually winter) months, we reduce protein and calcium levels by:
🌱Letting seeds sprout a little longer (which lowers protein content)
🍎Avoiding dry seed mixes, nuts, and high-sugar fruits
🥦Focusing instead on vegetables, sprouts, and a maintenance-formula pellet

🐦 What stays consistent:
Birds ALWAYS have access to food—this is about nutrition quality, not restriction.

😀 We also increase foraging and enrichment to simulate natural foraging behaviors during leaner months, keeping minds and bodies active.

The austerity period is also the perfect time to worm and treat for parasites, ensuring your birds are in top shape before transitioning to a breeding diet in spring.

Afternoon snacks😋 and songs 🎶 for Precious 🩶(female red belied parrot) and little Z. 🥰

Pellet conversion is complete. Now our parrots all have a bowl of pellets and get a fresh seasonal chop. This changes daily but today we have capsicum core, sweet potatoes, celery leaves and stalks, apple, sprouts and some micro greens- we have a couple of plant pots we empty the leftover finch seed in and water daily so they sprout into perfect fresh shoots or we can let grow out and harvest the green seed heads later for them.

Getting started on the laundry/ bird room. Here we have access to a sink, water, power and natural light. Everything we need to have access to when hand raising babies. In the perfect world there would be a dishwasher and bird fridge too 😝😂🌸. A girl can dream lol.

Birds make fantastic companions, whether that be a friendly chirp and flutter to share the afternoon with or a conversation and a laugh at the end of the day. At Tail Feathers we have specifically selected species for the family home. Our birds are raised in our home in preparation for yours.

Tail Feathers Brisbane has selected species that can be kept in the modern home, in suburbia. The Cayuga, Toulouse and Sebastopol have been selected considering their size, purpose, temperament lower food consumption, inability to fly and egg laying abilities.

Maybe you're looking for a companion bird but living in an apartment or just prefer a quieter feathered roommate, check out our budgies and cockatiels... want something more unique (maybe outgrown the budgie), then the Princess Parrot, Lorikeet, Alexandrine or Galah is exactly that.
