πŸš— ON THE ROAD: Rescue unavailable today (Wednesday 11th) πŸš—

🐒We are unavailable today for rescue or via telephone. We are on-route to a long distance release for 2 beautiful turtles who have both spent many months in care. More on those guys to come!

🌬 If you are Toowoomba or SE QLD it is rather windy today and we have had increased calls for birds and nestling. Below is some handy info sheets on ways to help, or contacts if you need help.

☎️ We are finally almost caught up on the backlog with only about 30 more contacts to go πŸ™Œ If you have not received contact yet please feel free to reach out via inbox and give me a shuffle along.

πŸ”΅ RETURN TO SERVICES- Update πŸ”΅

Well it's that time and we are resuming to normal services, and returning to full volumes wildlife intakes πŸ™Œ

After over 8 full weeks of closure it has been a journey to get to this point, but I am glad we are finally here.
In the background we have still had a steady flow of wildlife intakes from vet clinics and will be sure to share those journeys and releases over the coming weeks. The wonderful vets always give us the names of the public who rescue the wildlife and drop them in so you can see how your animal went in care πŸ˜ƒ Thank you to all the other carers and helpers who also helped take on numbers while we rebuilt (Terise, Laura, Kat, Tabitha, CamπŸ’š)

With such a rapid and unexpected closure we had limited resources and volunteer to assist with managing the constant stream of wildlife and private enquiries over the weeks so please bare with me as I catch up. As it sits this morning there is still over 340+ unanswered enquiries and I will be plowing through those over the weekend as quickly as possible.
If your enquiry is an emergency please feel free to send a follow up message with the word EMERGENCY and it will que an alert for me here.

Time frames for non urgent contact will take a few days while we get back into the swing of things. As you know we have less hands helping to carry the load and will strive to get back to efficiency in the inbox within the week. Phones will return Monday πŸ™ŒπŸ™ŒπŸ™ŒπŸ™Œ

🐸 In the meantime enjoy one of the beautiful froggies who has now been rehabilitated and released back in April following a misadventure with a cat. He was in care four weeks with us and has now been returned back to Highfields where he came πŸ’š

πŸ•Š Temporary Closure- Update πŸ•Š
- correction: sorry guys the date on the image is wrong and is meant to say the 29th πŸ’š

It is with sadness we can now announce publicly the reasons behind our sudden closure the past few weeks. If you have noticed our sudden absence this is due to the sudden and unexpected loss of two of our own, Natalie and Ana only months apart. Both very dear friends and cherished volunteers with us here at M.A.D Exotics & Reptile Care. Many of you had the pleasure of meeting of talking to both over the past few years.

It has taken some time to be able to publicly speak on this due to formality and private reasons. This loss has left a very large hole in our hearts and minds. As much as I had also tried to maintain operations following their passing this became increasingly difficult with the added impact of Cyclone Alfred causing substantial property damage to us here and further displacing operations.

We made the decision to temporarily close 3 weeks ago on the wake of Alfred leaving us with no power or telecommunications. Repairs are ongoing and not estimated to be completed until the 29th May. For some reason the planned post to our page did not stay posted as a notified.

For this reason we will remain temporarily closed until the 29th May. During this time we will also be adding extra volunteer roles and likely paid positions. Please bare with is during this process and it is a difficult thing to fill two cherished peices of our team.

To those who have been trying unsuccessfully to reach us, sincere apologies our telephones is currently off. And our inbox is only checked every few days currently until we return to full power and telecommunications.

Wildlife intakes are still available via veterinary clinics. Vets we network with have my personal number to use freely until we re-open. We are full for birds however. Reptiles plenty of space as always.

Much love and thanks to those that have silently carried us in the background the past few weeks with insect feeds, rats/mice, driving, volunteering and a friendly ear and hugs. Including Laura's Unconventional Menagerie and Wildlife Rehabilitation , Aquabird Pet Centre Toowoomba Western Downs Snake Catcher Hatched - Reptiles & Supplies Cameron Horvatic Kat Harper

☎️ Please if you work within the animal and veterinary fields lean on those around you when times are tough. Be aware the impacts our roles have and Compassion Fatigue. Talk to people around you, and take a break when needed. Services such as Beyond Blue, Black Dog Institute, Line Line and other are always there. Please talk to someone.
Much love πŸ’š

πŸ“’ Call for help- Food πŸ“’

We are calling to other reptile keepers or community members who may have insect feeders, insect colonies or frozen rodents (or have them roaming at home). Or community members with any beef mince and/or chicken hearts. Due to floods and no access for deliveries our feed supply is cut off. Cancelled the day before our monthly order. Panic shopping has continued to clear the supermarkets before we can get our hands on anything anywhere. Not a scrap of meat or mince in days.

This has left us with minimal feed in a time we are receiving very high volumes of wildlife in the wake of cyclone Alfred.

ALL wildlife that come to us are sick or injured, meaning that food and diet is absolutely critical for them. Others may be part way through their recovery and already weaned onto live feed in preparation for next steps of rehabilitation and release. Although we always keep powdered feed, veggies and seed for other species, these guys rely on live food or meat.

If you maybe have any of the below and are able to donate even a small amount please message us:
- mince (beef)
- snails
- chicken hearts
- woodies
- roaches
- crickets
- giant mealworms
- pinkie, fuzzie or hopper mice
- pinkie or smaller rats
- any winged or flying insects

Some species needing live food include:
πŸ¦β€β¬› Magpie
πŸ¦‰ Tawnys
🐦 kingfisher
πŸ€ Melomys
🐸 Frogs
🦎 Lizards, skinks and geckos

If you are a reptile owner we can also swap larger size rodents (jumbo) for smaller options.

🦜 LOST/FOUND BIRD 🦜

We are currently holding a pet bird which has escaped it's humans at some stage prior/during storms. This bird is easily distinguishable as a captive pet.

🟒 Area found: South Toowoomba, University/Japanese Gardens Precinct.

If you have recently lost a captive bird please send us a PM here via our inbox with the type of bird, image and relevant identification features. Please included whether your bird can/cannot fly, and the level of handling ability.

Please do not call the rescue number as we are holding open for emergency calls.

⚠️ Sticky Traps ⚠️

Graphic images yes, however important to see how horrible sticky traps are. I was called to a house where a lady had thought some lizards were stuck to the wall. Due to all the water items in the shed were moved and lifted which revealed 50+ sticky traps nailed to the skirting panels (by a previous tenant or owner). Sadly there was a myriad of dead frogs, geckos, garden skinks, and other little critters.

Please avoid all forms of sticky traps that are commonly sold for cockroaches or other pests. Many species of wildlife get caught and die a slow painful death 😒 These frogs, geckos and skinks would have taken days -> months to die. They break their limbs trying to escape them. Other animals come to predate upon them and also get stuck themselves.

The sad thing is these geckos, frogs and skinks all would have been excellent little bug and cockroach hunters naturally :(

🚨 Road closures, rescue & birds 🚨

Due to roads closures and flooding down the range we are not attending any on-site rescue down the range. Your closest vet location in that area is RedVets.

We are still doing normal collections at safe locations for wildlife where required. Please use inbox as Telstra service has been crashing.

CARERS- If you are a currently licenced carer in Toowoomba directly able and capable of taking birds please pop us an inbox or comment below. Some vet clinics have not been able to reach carers taking birds at the moment. This will include nestling and fledglings downed in storms. These details will be provided to the clinics directly for their directory.

Stay safe all.

Birds info sheers posted again on comments.

🐒 Storm Update - Power & Turtles 🐒

We are without power and very sketchy phone service. Facebook messenger is best contact for enquiries.

There are many turtles on the move, this is normal is wet weather. You may see them wandering through parks, yards or along the roadside. If you need to move a turtle off the road exercise personal safety first. Ensure if you move turtle you place it in the direction it was travelling or it will turn around. Do not take them home.

There is a turtle info sheet in the comments below from our wildlife info series last month.

🐍🦎 Captive Keepers- Natural events & evacuation tips 🦎🐍

We have followers all over Australia including the areas of Queensland and Western Australia currently being affected by storms and cyclones. This can cause stress and concern for reptile keepers that rely on heat.
Below are some handy reference sheets for ways you can prepare in storms and/or emergency situations with reptiles and amphibians if you are stuck without power or forced to leave your home.

The last page also includes handy info we should be considering in daily lives as well as storm/hazard events or home emergencies.

🐒🚫 Turtles- Please Read 🚫🐒

We have posted this many times but it is a good time for a reminder with upwards of 10 calls a day for turtles at the moment. Last week I spent 31 hours driving around returning turtles that were taken unnecessarily. This also removed availability to animals that were actually injured.

Please do not take turtles if you see them walking along paths, parks, roads etc unless injured. It is late into the breeding season and they are still mating, egg laying and dispersing. They is no need to remove them. Overcast weather is more likely to have turtles on the move, especially females.

If they need help crossing the road for safety please lift them carefully and place them in the direction they were already travelling. Please have understanding that wildlife know what they are doing and where they are going.

This is putting strain on our resources and other carers. Please only remove animals that are injured. If injured take directly to a vet, or, message us on the inbox anytime.

🐒 We have Eastern long-necked turtles and Eastern short-necked turtles all around us this is very normal behaviour.
