The subject of bell boots came up the other day. I occasionally suggest to a client that they get bell boots for the front feet of their horse if the horse habitually over-reaches or "forges". It is an uncommon occurrence, usually one that happens when a rambunctious horse is playing in turn out. but when a horse damages his own heel of a forefoot and comes up lame it is an inconvenience to say the least not to mention the pain the horse endures for a few days. . The other reason to use bell boots is for horses that pull off front shoes with hind feet .A bell boot that hangs down over the heels of the shoes can help prevent shoe pulling. I have illustrated two fits of bell boots. The smaller ones will protect the heels of the foot but not the shoe. So when your farrier suggests bell boots for shoe pulling, be sure get a large enough size to protect both the foot and the heels of the shoes.
