WINTER GARDEN -whats growing? 🤨 Things slow down, but there's always still food to be found! 🧐

• Jalepenos - they've slowed down, but haven't gone to sleep this winter. There's still a couple on each plant!
• Dill - for making pickles!
• Tomatoes - it's been a very slow start, but some bushes are finally starting to fruit
• Shelling peas - we will plant a whole bed of these next year, they're delish
• Garlic - long way to go yet, we'll harvest in November
• Mulberries - tree is covered in fruit and new growth, a couple months early too!
• Carrots - they're finally starting to get big
• Dragon fruit - they're getting there slowly
• Potatoes - looking so lush and healthy
• Tumeric - almost ready to harvest
• Cabbage - they're just starting to firm up their heads so hopefully they'll be ready in about 4wks
• Spinach - needs to be picked and frozen for cooking
• Lettuce - ready to be eaten, we've been harvesting small amounts already
• Kale - we continually pick these and freeze them for meals
• Celery - it's looking good and we tried some stalks today!
• Strawberries - they're all new plants and are pushing out some delicious fruit every couple of days
• Brown onions - they're growing really well, but have a long way to go still
• Coriander - doing well and we've been enjoying fresh on our meals, we'll start freezing some soon
• Sugar snap peas & snow peas - eating continuously and giving away continuously. We always grow too many. 🤣

Grow your own food they say. It'll save you money they say. 🤣
In truth, we don't mind the expense. We don't grow food to save money. It's for many other reasons. But we will go into that in a video soon that we're planning on filming. If you have any questions you want us to answer, please ask!

This garden bed was a complete mess and I couldn't ignore it for another season. 🌱

I spent a few hours over the week pruning bushes, digging out unwanted plants, pulling w**ds, adding compost & sugarcane mulch, and then tucking in daffodils and ranunculus ready for the Spring months ahead.

A little bit of work now can turn into something beautiful later. 🌼 And now we wait for spring to do its thing!

Do you plant flowers for spring where you live, or are you still in garden clean-up mode?

👇 Tell me what's going in your garden this season, and follow along for more real-life homesteading, gardening, and growing-your-own-food inspiration.

We started our garden around 9 years ago while we were living in a rental. We had limited space so we planted a few things in a gap in the garden beds, and the rest went into pots. We used this time to learn a lot about growing. YouTube was our friend to educate us! We came across so many amazing channels with people just like us, who were growing in their backyard or on their small properties. They taught us so much and we are forever in their debt. At some point in those first couple of years, we developed a little bit of a mantra of "everyone can grow". And we've carried that through over the years, especially now that we are sharing online what we are doing. We hope that we can encourage and educate people in how to grow and to be excited about it! We are so passionate about sharing what we know, and sharing the abundance that anybody can produce for themselves for their families.

I'm just over here filming all the things I'm already doing, hoping to eventually contribute financially to my family as a stay at home, homesteading, home schooling, make from scratch Mama. 🤷🏽‍♀️ -Christy

We planted giant snow peas this year. And giant they are. Some are as long as Clara's face. They're as big as my hand. They're crunchy, sweet and delicious. The blooms are stunning blends of pink and purple too. So pretty. 😍 -Christy

A week or so ago, we harvested our apples 🍎 (check out a few posts back). It didn't look like they were keeping very well on the bench, and some of them were starting to get dark spots. So I knew I needed to get them preserved ASAP. 15 jars of applesauce are now canned and I'll pop them up on the shelf tomorrow once they have cooled down.
Working on food preservation projects with kids is never easy. I think I did a pretty good job of masking how frustrating it was in the filming of this video. 🫣 But I'm a big believer in getting your kids involved in what you are doing. Whether it's in the kitchen, around the house or out in the garden. I believe that getting them involved and teaching them how to do things helps to create a child that wants to be helpful and involved as they get older. They're able to take responsibility for tasks well beyond their years. Knowledge is power. Even when you're 1 or 6 years old! -Christy

It's taken 3 rounds of w**ding to get the garden beds back to this state. I started keeping track of the hours during the second round of w**ding. I estimate that it's taken around 35 hours. Literally on my hands and knees w**ding hundreds of thousands of w**ds. Big and small. The pregnancy and newborn season of life meant I couldn't stay on top of the garden, and I lost control on the war of w**ds. Dex is now 19 months and I'm only just now getting back on top of it. It's been a huge struggle. Both mentally (seeing it so horrible), and on my body. Also, the enormity of the task whilst juggling so many other life things. But we're approaching square one. Woodchip will be delivered in the next week or so to top up pathways. I'm about to fertilise and sugar cane mulch garden beds. 16 trays of seeds are planted, germinating and growing quickly. I'm trying my darnest to get this garden back to its full growing potential. It's not over yet though. Weeds will continue to plague me. There are more w**d seeds in my soil than I could ever count. But I'm hopeful as they get covered up, they won't germinate so heavily.
All that remains in the beds now are the last few spring/summer crops. The last few tomatoes are ripening, then they'll be ripped out. A few flowers that are hanging on. Jalapenos that are perennials and will keep producing until winter hits (then they'll go to sleep and I'll prune them). Loofahs that seem to want to live forever. And basil that keeps starting again every time I hack it back.
I'm excited for what feels like a fresh start. Hoping for a better Autumn/Winter season than Spring/Summer was.
