Feeding a natural diet is far more economical than many processed feeds. It also enables you to tailor the ingredients to each individual horse.

The diet is based on a combination of hay, chaff, proteins, oils and other natural supplements including some dried herbs.

WHOLE HERBS are the herb in its natural form and often includes leaves, stems and roots. It is then dried and used as is, or ground into a powder form. As the preparation process is fairly simple, this form of herb is usually less expensive than herbal extracts. However, whole herbs are not standardized and have therefore not been tested to ascertain how much of each chemical component they actually contain – this makes it hard to judge quality and potency.

HERBAL EXTRACTS are herbs that have had liquid drawn out of the plant and contain the full spectrum of plant chemicals. Unlike whole herbs, liquid extracts CAN be standardized and the quality and potency can be measured. Liquid herbal extracts are far more concentrated than the whole/ powdered forms and therefore less is needed per dose. While herbal extracts may be more expensive to purchase, their lower dosage requirements actually make them more economical to administer.

At a Horses Inside Out Conference, Dr Andrew Hemmings (Associate Professor and Head of the Equine Management and Science) at the Royal Agricultural University spoke briefly on the topic of blink rate in horses. Discussing dopamine receptors and the horses spontaneous blink rate (dopamine is a neurotransmitter – responsible for transmitting signals between the nerve cells of the brain). ⁣

Through research Dr Hemmings has observed that high blinkers (those with 500+ blinks in a 30 minute period) are⁣
far more hyperactive. Whereas low blinkers (150-200 blinks in a 30 minute period) were found to be more docile and calm.⁣

He concluded that blink rate is a good way of analysing horses for their temperament and anxiety levels (as well as using other methods). Training schedules should be tailored to suit the⁣ individual horse based on their temperament and anxiety levels, particularly in highly strung horses.⁣

Fascinating stuff!! Now to go and count my horses blink rate LOL

For me, my job of treating your horse doesn't just start when I drive through your gate, nor does it end when I hop back in my car and leave for the next client.⁣

My job starts as soon as you book. I am already thinking of the issues your horse may have and planning (in my head) the best course of treatment to try. After the treatment, when I have driven away (and for weeks afterwards), I will think about the way your horse responded - was it a positive response or negative? Could I have done something differently to effect a bigger difference? Should I have done less? Usually the horse is in a type of euphoria following a massage, and the true 'results' of my treatment are not clear for a day or two afterwards. I wonder in those days how your horses' muscles and tissues are - is your horse comfortable? Are you happy with the treatment? Do you have any questions?⁣

At the end of the day, when I am at home taking notes of the clients that day, I schedule in a call-back to you within the next couple of days, hoping to hear that your horse is much happier, more comfortable and that I have in fact made a difference to their wellbeing.⁣

If something became evident (or you asked a question) that I didn't have an answer for, I will spend my days researching it and finding answers or at least other options to see if I can help your horse.⁣

You see, I have studied bodywork/biomechanics for over 6 years, studied Equine Sports Massage for 2 years, acupuncture for 12 months, currently studying herbal medicine and nutrition, and attended various other clinics and workshops because I LOVE horses - always have, always will. I want to make a difference in horses' lives because they are such beautiful creatures and they are my passion ❤.

At the end of each ride, allowing your horse to stretch through the neck, back and hindquarters is an excellent way of keeping them supple. Riding at a slow trot, holding the reins at the buckle (if safe to do so!) encourages the horse to lower his/her head and really stretch through the topline.
