✨️Welcome Dr Hugh! ✨️

We have been open a year now and have enjoyed meeting every one of you. The Tewantin community has welcomed us with open arms and in the same way we hope you will welcome our newest team member Dr. Hugh Hiemstra.

He will be available for consultations on Mondays, and we’re thrilled to have him on board.

A little about Dr Hugh…
Dr Hubert Hiemstra is an experienced small animal veterinarian with over 20 years in the profession, with a strong background in both emergency and general practice. He brings a calm, practical approach to clinical work, with a passion for problem-solving and clear communication.

Hugh is also the host of The Vet Vault podcast, where he gets to learn from some of the best veterinary specialists in the world on an almost daily basis and shares those insights with vets across the globe.

He’s committed to continuous learning and supporting the veterinary community—both at the consult table and beyond.

Outside of work, Hugh is a dad to three energetic young boys, a whippet-poodle cross, a long-haired dachshund, and more chickens than he can count! He is a keen surfer, and his rare spare time seems him joining the younger crew at the beach :)

Dear TNVet Family,

⚠️ Important Update: Temporary Closure Due to Tropical Cyclone Alfred ⚠️

With Tropical Cyclone Alfred approaching, we have made the difficult decision to temporarily close The Neighbourhood Vet – Tewantin for the remainder of Thursday, March 6th, Friday, March 7th, and Saturday, March 8th.

This decision was not made lightly, but the safety of our staff, our community, and, of course, our beloved patients is our top priority.

We know how important your pet’s health and well-being are, and we truly appreciate your understanding as we pause our services during this extreme weather event. All being well, we will reopen on Monday, March 10th, at 8:00 AM.

If your pet experiences an emergency during this time, please head to your nearest 24-hour emergency veterinary centre.

As our community prepares for the potential impact of Tropical Cyclone Alfred, we want to reassure you that our clinic remains open and urgent appointments are currently available.

We plan to stay open on Wednesday, March 5th, with extended hours to accommodate all urgent cases. Our operating hours for Thursday, March 6th, and Friday, March 7th will depend on the cyclone’s impact. We will provide updates on our opening hours via Facebook, text message, and email as the situation develops.

Did you know that raisins and grapes are highly toxic to dogs? 🍇

School’s back, which means lunchboxes mysteriously end up on the floor, kids definitely drop snacks, and dogs instantly become professional cleanup crews.

But beware—raisins and grapes are NOT dog-friendly! In fact they can cause serious kidney failure in dogs.

🐶 Signs your dog had a forbidden fruit:
❌ Vomiting
❌ Lethargy
❌ Loss of appetite
❌️ Increased thirst or urination

If your dog sneaks one, CALL US IMMEDIATELY! No time for “wait and see” (or Googling “how much raisin is too much?”).

Let’s keep those sneaky snack thieves safe! Store lunchboxes high, train kids to not share, and remind yourself that dogs cannot have “just one.”

While you celebrate, please remember to keep your pets safe in the summer heat.

Provide plenty of fresh water, shade, and avoid walking them during the hottest parts of the day.
