One of the hardest parts of loving a pet… is knowing they won’t be with us forever.

As pets age, the questions often change.
Not “how do we fix this?”
but “how do we keep them comfortable?”
“what feels fair?”
“how do we know when it’s time?”

These are deeply personal conversations.
Whether it’s discussing pain, mobility, appetite, enjoyment, or when things are starting to change… our role is to help guide families through it, like we would with our own pet.

Sometimes caring for our pets means making difficult decisions, out of love.
And that love matters. Just know, you never have to navigate these moments alone.

There's a particular kind of love that comes with watching a pet grow old.

You know their rhythms. You know which mornings are harder. You've started noticing things you didn't used to, like the way they sleep more deeply now.

That attentiveness? It's actually one of the best things you can do for a senior pet. You know them better than anyone. And the small changes you notice are the ones worth bringing to us.

If your pet is in this season, you're doing it right. Just keep paying attention.

💙 Save this one. And share it with someone in the same season.

**A patient story 💛**

We’ve been seeing this sweet face for years (16 to be exact!!!!!)

From younger days to now, where our walks are becoming slower; from routine check-ups to helping with sore teeth that come with getting older; it’s been a privilege to be part of their journey.

One of the most special parts of veterinary medicine is growing alongside our patients and their families.

Senior pets teach us so much about resilience, trust, and unconditional love.

And honestly? We fall a little bit in love with every grey muzzle that walks through our doors.

Please send a 💛 for this beautiful senior soul.

Pain in pets is very different than you think it is

❌ It's not always limping.
❌ It's not always crying.
✅ It's the dog who stopped jumping on the couch.
✅ It’s the cat who sleeps in a different spot.
✅ It’s the pet who takes a little longer to get going in the morning and you put it down to age.

Pain management in 2026 looks very different to what it used to. Anti-inflammatories, joint supplements, laser therapy, acupuncture, environmental adjustments… there's a lot we can do, and the starting point is usually just a conversation.

If you've been watching your pet slow down and wondering if it's worth bringing up — it is. That's what we're here for.

We answer a lot of questions every single day in clinic. About what to feed, what to watch for, when to worry, when to wait.

So we started writing them down.

The EDVH blog is live 🎉 and the first article is about heartworm: what it is, how it spreads, and what to do if prevention has slipped. Worth a read if it's been on your mental list.

We'll keep adding to it. Topics you actually ask about, explained the way we'd explain them in a consult, without the jargon.

Are your pets actually just slowing down…?

What looks like slowing down can actually be signs of discomfort.
Same goes for the little hesitation before jumping.
Or even sleeping more.
Or not wanting to go on walks like they used to.

These can be signs of arthritis.
The good news is: there are ways we can help.

Old age is unavoidable, but we can make sure our pets age with comfort
Save this as a reminder

Some consults are slower… but they matter just as much.

Our gorgeous old girl here is just taking a bit of a slower walk into the room, a bit more time getting comfortable, and overall a different kind of energy to the bouncy pups we normally see.

Older pets don’t always show us big signs, and like our girl here, it’s our job to help them move into their old age with as much grace and comfort as we can.

Double tap if you have a senior pet 💛
