Like many businesses at the moment, we are currently experiencing an ongoing staff shortage. Our team is working incredibly hard to ensure every patient receives the care and attention they need while also taking care of the health and wellbeing of our staff.

Please remember that, at times, emergencies will take priority over routine appointments. This can mean you may experience a longer wait than usual or your appointment could get rescheduled to a different day. Please consider planning and booking your appointments in advance where possible.

It appears someone stripped off and had a wash in our dog bowl over the weekend 🤭

We have popped this shirt through the wash and pegged it on the line at the back of our clinic. We will leave it here for the next couple of days for the owner to reclaim.

Note: If unclaimed by Friday, this will be donated to Bindaree.

Today we’re saying a sad goodbye to our amazing locum vet Dr Christie Nel.

We want to take a moment to thank him for everything he has done for our team and our patients. He stepped in during some challenging times but his knowledge, calm nature, willingness to help and friendship has made a huge difference to both our clients and colleagues.

His good humour and easy-going nature has made him quiet the favourite around the clinic and he will be missed more than he is probably expecting.

We wish him all the very best as he heads home on his next adventure, he’ll always be welcome back.

Safe travels Dr Christie and don’t forget about us! 🐾💙

🐾 All of it happening in real cases, real time
You’ll be right there in consults, in surgery, in the messy “what do I do now?” moments, helping new grads and limited registration vets build confidence and actually enjoy practice.

Happy 11th Birthday to this gorgeous Wolfhound, Rindi! 🎉🐺🎂

Not many pups spend their birthday having surgery, but this gentle giant was an absolute superstar. She took everything in her stride and soaked up plenty of birthday cuddles and treats from our team. 💜

Did you know? Irish Wolfhounds typically have a lifespan of around 6–8 years, so reaching 11 years old is an amazing milestone, a testament to the love and care she's received. ❤️

Wishing our birthday girl a smooth recovery, lots of love, and hopefully some well-deserved birthday treats once she's feeling better. Happy Birthday, beautiful! 🐾🎈

🐍 Carpet Python: "Yeah, nah... I'll be right."

Up in the palms a python and chainsaw met,
which landed him in at Boyne Tannum Vet.

With a bit of veterinary magic, and plenty of care
Dr Saint stitched him up, a quick little repair.

Remember when in the garden, take a quick look around
you never know who's hiding, sharing common ground.

🚨 Avian Influenza (Bird Flu): What You Need to Know 🦆🐦
Avian influenza, also known as bird flu, is an infectious disease that affects birds and is caused by influenza A viruses. There are two types:
🔴 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) – Causes severe illness and can result in sudden death.
🟡 Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza (LPAI) – Usually causes mild or few signs of illness.
🐓 Signs to watch for in birds:
• Loss of coordination
• Tremors
• Twisted neck or unusual posture
• Inability to stand or fly
• Diarrhoea
• Difficulty breathing
• Coughing or sneezing
• Swelling around the head, neck or eyes
• Cloudy or abnormal-looking eyes
• Sudden death
🌿 Which animals can be affected?
Waterfowl, seabirds and shorebirds are the wild birds most commonly associated with avian influenza. Overseas, HPAI has also been found in marine mammals and other mammals that prey on or scavenge birds.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 What about people?
While some strains of avian influenza can infect humans, the current risk to the Queensland public is considered low.
🛡️ How can you help?
If you handle birds, always:
✔️ Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
✔️ Practise good hand hygiene.
✔️ Clean and disinfect equipment and any potentially contaminated skin after contact with birds.

If you notice sick or dead birds showing these signs, avoid handling them where possible and report them to Gladstone Wildlife Carers 0427 106 803 or the EAD 24/7 Hotline 1800 675 888. Early reporting helps protect our wildlife, poultry and the community.
