Chronic colic cases can sometimes be challenging to diagnose, especially when routine investigations show minimal abnormalities.

This 18-year-old Friesian mare presented to Tamworth Equine Veterinary Centre for ongoing colic symptoms. Physical examination, re**al examination, abdominal ultrasound and bloodwork revealed very few significant findings. While she showed some response to medical treatment, the symptoms would return as pain relief wore off.

A gastroscope examination performed by Dr Sam Morley & Dr Matt Kelly identified the cause, revealing severe Grade 4 squamous gastric ulceration.

Following a 4-week treatment course with omeprazole and sucralfate, alongside dietary and husbandry changes, her colic symptoms improved within just 7 days. On repeat gastroscopy, the ulceration had completely resolved.

Most importantly, she is now a much happier and more comfortable horse.
