Nuclear Medicine - Hyperthyroidism

Did you know that Gladesville Veterinary Hospital is the only practice in NSW that posses a gamma camera to perform scintigraphy scans? The scintigraphy scan is used mainly in pets with thyroid issues, it is highly accurate to detect thyroid growths that can be either benign or malignant, making it the gold standard test to diagnose hyperthyroidism, especially in cats.

Hyperthyroidism in cats is a common hormonal disease in elderly cats that increases their metabolism to abnormally high levels, causing a variety of clinical signs, being ravenous appetite and rapid weight loss the 2 most common signs. Scintigraphy scan or thyroid scan also provides with crucial information for the use of radioactive iodine (I131) as treatment to cure benign hyperthyroidism and even in some cases treat thyroid cancer.

If your cat has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism or you suspect that they may be a sufferer - call us on 98175758 to discuss the treatment options.

🦘🐦 Wildlife Warriors, Important Message! 🐍🦇

Sydney Wildlife Rescue’s Mobile Care Unit is back at Gladesville Vet Hospital this Friday & Saturday (May 2 & 3)! 💚

Their amazing team of volunteer vets and wildlife carers will be set up in our car park, ready to provide free treatment and vet assessments for injured native wildlife—including including flying foxes, possums, reptiles, wombats, birds, and more.

They’ve got a busy few days ahead with lots of wild patients to care for (including a kangaroo! 🦘), but they’re also here to support the community—so if you find any injured or unwell wildlife, please drop by and bring them in.

This is such a special partnership, and we’re proud to be able to host a service that makes such a difference for our native animals. Let’s work together to give them the care they need and deserve. 🌿💙

🌍🐾 World Veterinary Day – A Belated But Deeply Grateful Thank You! 🐾🌍

Last Saturday was World Veterinary Day, and while we might be a few days late, our gratitude for the amazing vets here at Gladesville Vet Hospital is something we feel every single day.

To our veterinary team: THANK YOU for the compassion, dedication, and expertise you bring to every patient, every shift, and every challenge. Your tireless work doesn’t go unnoticed—from comforting a nervous puppy, to diagnosing complex medical conditions, to performing life-changing procedures. Every day, you care for an incredible range of animals—dogs, cats, rabbits, and birds—with the same commitment and love as if they were your own.

We are so lucky to have such an exceptional team of vets, and our patients (and their humans!) are even luckier. 💙

Join us in saying a massive THANK YOU—drop a photo of your pet in the comments and help us show some love to the people who make Gladesville Vet Hospital such a special place. 🐶🐱🐰🐦
