Senior pets and toilet troubles — what’s normal, and what’s not?

If your older cat or dog is:
– Leaking urine
– Peeing more often
– Straining to wee
– Or showing blood in their urine

…it’s time to get them checked.

Urinary issues in senior pets are common but not a normal part of ageing. The cause could be anything from a simple infection to incontinence, kidney disease, or even cancer.

At Summer Hill Village Vet, we don’t guess - we test. A quick urine sample and blood test can give us the answers we need to help your pet feel better fast.

💡 Tip: Bring a urine sample to every senior check-up. We’d much rather catch something early than see it become serious.

📞 Call (02) 9797 2555 or book online to chat about your pet’s toilet troubles - we’re here to help.

Increased thirst isn’t always “just old age.”
It could be an early sign of kidney disease – one of the most common conditions we see in senior cats and dogs.

Other subtle signs include:
– More frequent urination
– Weight loss
– A duller coat
– Changes in appetite or energy

Just like in humans, kidney disease often creeps in quietly. But early diagnosis means better outcomes – and more good years with your pet.

At Summer Hill Village Vet, we offer:
– In-house blood and urine testing
– Blood pressure monitoring
– Ultrasound if needed

Whether it’s a mild chronic issue or a sudden kidney event, we’re here to help manage and protect your pet’s kidney function.

💡 Noticed any changes in thirst, appetite, or behaviour? Don’t wait. Book a senior check-up today.

Is your cat just fussy… or is something wrong?

If your senior cat is still eating but losing weight, vomiting more often, or skipping meals, it might not be picky eating - it could be Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).

IBD is a chronic gut condition that affects older cats and dogs. It can cause:
– Vomiting or diarrhoea
– Weight loss
– Constipation
– Poor nutrient absorption

Left untreated, long-term IBD may even progress to gut cancer in some cats.

At Summer Hill Village Vet, we look out for these signs at every senior check-up. If needed, we may recommend:
– Abdominal ultrasound
– Specialised blood tests
– A trial with a therapeutic diet

Many cases can be managed without invasive procedures – but we also work closely with veterinary specialists if advanced care is needed.

💡 If your pet is vomiting regularly, losing weight, or having bathroom changes – don’t wait. It might not be old age. It might be IBD.

🐱 Thinner? Hungrier? Still losing weight?
If your senior cat seems leaner, louder, or just a bit “off,” it might not be ageing – it could be hyperthyroidism.

This common condition causes the thyroid gland to produce too much hormone, speeding up your cat’s metabolism. While they might seem energetic or always hungry, untreated hyperthyroidism can lead to muscle loss, heart disease, high blood pressure and kidney stress.

At Summer Hill Village Vet, we check for thyroid issues at every senior cat exam. A simple blood test can catch it early – and the good news is, it’s highly treatable.
✔️ Daily medication
✔️ Prescription diet
✔️ One-time radioactive iodine therapy (yes – a potential cure!)

If your pet seems thinner, less muscular or just “frailer” than usual, let’s find out why – and keep them strong and healthy for years to come.

📞 Call (02) 9797 2555 or book an appointment online today for your senior pet – whether you’re concerned or just keeping up with checks.
