Let’s Talk About Gastrointestinal Stasis Syndrome

Decreased appetite and defecation, indicating that the gut has stopped moving, is one of the most common emergencies in rabbit and guinea pigs.

If a rabbit or guinea pig has a decreased appetite or has not defecated for 6 hours, they should be seen by a veterinarian urgently.

GI stasis is a clinical sign of an underlying cause. One common cause is a blockage in the gut (hairball, food impaction) but anything that causes stress and pain can cause gut stasis - dental pain, urinary issues, pneumonia and others.

When the pet stops eating, the gut slows down and becomes distended with gas. This causes compression of important blood vessels, pressure on the diaphragm, and severe pain. It is an emergency and requires prompt treatment of pain relief, hydration, Critical Care Herbivore support feeding and identification and treatment of the underlying cause.

Prompt treatment gives your pet the best chance!
