On average, studies show that horses in a paddock or out to pasture graze for a minimum of 12-14 hours each day.
If your horse is rugged, that also means that for at least 12-14 hours every day, they are leaning down over a metal or plastic buckle which sticks into their chest.
In comparison, imagine sitting down at work for 8 hours with a snug-fitting belt on. I’m sure everyone can relate to that feeling of taking the belt off at the end of the day and feeling so much relief. Sometimes, you’ll even have an imprint in your skin from where the belt was sticking into you all day.
Now, while not overly painful, imagine how your horse feels when that rug is left on them for days or even weeks at a time. I’ve seen horses with red, raw chests from constantly leaning on the rug buckle or strap.
Our chest protectors are made from thick, spongey neoprene and you can choose between a light cotton or softer, thicker flannelette for the outer fabric. They ensure that your horse stays just that extra bit more comfortable while wearing their rug, by providing an extra layer of cushioning around the buckle.
They are made to order, and are only $7 each. They can be made in all different sizes, prints and lengths!
