Parmi was very tired after our training session today!

Her owner contacted us to help with pulling on the lead and to help with her behaviour around other dogs!

When trying to change a behaviour it's important to think how long has my dog been practising this behaviour for? If the answer is a long time we can't expect to change that very quickly! If the dog has a long reinforcement history the behaviour might be resistant to change but by being consistent and communicating effectively with the dog we can start seeing progress.

Practicing training in the right environment where your dog can be successful is crucial so the dog can win!

I'm sure we will be seeing a lot of progress with Parmi as long as we keep up with training 🐾 🐾

Beautiful Coco is a high energy puppy who is driving her owner a bit crazy!

Her owner has 3 kids including a 7 month old baby. Raising a puppy is hard work as it is and having 3 little kids to look after on top of that can make the whole experience very overwhelming but by implementing some management strategies and boundaries in place and prevent your puppy to start rehearsing undesirable behaviours we can start teaching our puppies what is right and what is wrong!

We have to remember our puppies don't come us knowing how the should be behave, what is acceptable and what is not! It is up to us to teach them how to fit in our human world!

Winnie is a puppy who is going to be a big dog.
Some dog powers might not care some much for certain behaviours like jumping or pulling on the lead for example when the puppy is young and small but those same behaviours will not be appreciated when the puppy becomes an adult dog.

We need to start with that in mind when we bring our puppies home! Think ahead and start how you like to finish! Early puppyhood is the most important stage in your dog's life and making an effort to understand and train your puppy will prevent some many problems in the future!

This cutie pie is little Huxley and he is learning that the word "YES" predicts a reward.

When your puppy or dog learns their "
Markers" communication becomes so much easier and the puppy understands what is right from wrong.

Training becomes more effective because we are able to pin point the moment in time the puppy makes the right choice!

Are you getting a puppy for Christmas?

Training should start as soon as the puppy gets home!

Did you know that Mr Pooch offers private puppy training in the convenience of your own home?

This is Ted!

Ted is a pocket bully and is super strong making walks very hard and stressful because he pulls a lot on the lead.

Walking your dog should be an enjoyable time and one that you should look forward to!

We started working with Ted to address that and other problem behaviours and he is doing very well! One thing we need to keep in mind when training our dogs is keep it fun!

Motivation will always be higher when the dog really enjoys the training which will give you better results!

This is lovely Herbie!

Herbie gets very excited when people come over so his owner decided to contact us to help teaching him to regulate his emotions and learn some impulse control.

That will help with polite greetings and to prevent him from jumping on visitors! And a big plus we are also teaching him to not go crazy when someone rings the doorbell!

Just practicing a fee minutes everyday and gradually raising the criteria will get you great results!

Little Bear needs to learn to regulate his emotions when he sees other dogs!

Do you always allow your dog to say hello to other dogs on a walk? If so you are creating a pattern of behaviour where your dog will have the expectation of saying hello every time he sees another dog!

That is problematic because of a few reasons!
- you don't actually know the dogs you will encounter on a walk and they might snap at your dog creating a bad experience for you dog!
- you are reinforcing high arousal and excitement, if your dog achieve what they want which is to get closer to the other dog this behaviour will only get stronger over time.
- this habit can create reactivity because your dog can become frustrated when he is not allowed to get close to another dog and that will be displayed as barking and lunging.
- your dog sees other dogs as more valuable than you on walks which will make training around distractions harder for you.

Would you like to learn how to have your dog more engaged with you on walks? Mr Pooch can help! 🐾🐾🐾

Dog training is rarely linear! You will come
accross setbacks but consistency is key!

Sometimes we need to adjust our expectations and that's fine!

Sometimes is hard but a trained dog will give you and the dog more freedom while an untrained dog a lot of the times will control your life! Choose your hard!

Let's talk about 3 things that will help you if you have a reactive dog!

Distance, motivation and timing!

Distance refers to the critical distance that your dog needs be from the trigger, that could be another dog, a person, a bike, etc in order to feel safe or not overwhelmed.

Motivation is the reason why your dog will choose to pay attention to you and take your guidance instead of paying attention to the trigger! Have you worked in engagement when out and about? Does your dog have some solid behaviours that he can perform on cue?
Are you choosing the right reward for your dog?

Timing is crucial! If we are not paying attention to the environment and the dog sees the trigger before we do our chances of preventing a reaction are very low! Are you waiting too long before getting your dog to focus on you?

Are you meeting your dog's needs for physical and mental exercise?

All of the above should be taken into consideration when approaching reactivity!

If you need a hand with training Mr Pooch would love to help! 🐾🐾🐾

Does anyone out there can relate to that? Lol

All jokes aside many dog owners are quick to think that their dog ( especially young dogs) have separation anxiety when they display any sign of stress when left alone!

The term is overused a lot and while there are some real cases of separation anxiety in a lot of cases what we actually see is a dog who is frustated, under exercised and under stimulated!

In a lot if cases when we increase the amount of exercise and mental stimulation and give the dog " jobs" to do that frustation will go away!
Managing your home environment and implementing some boundaries along with some desensitisation work will also help your dog to feel more relaxed when home alone!
