WARNING: Not All Bamboo Rabbit Chews Are Genuine Bamboo!
Some commercial rabbit chews sold as Bamboo Sticks, Sweet Bamboo or Sugar Cane Bamboo may actually contain dried sugarcane rather than genuine bamboo.
Why Does This Matter?
Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) is grown for sugar production. Its stalks contain natural sugars and are not recommended as regular rabbit chews.
Rabbits need a high-fibre, low-sugar diet. Excessive sugar consumption may contribute to:
* Digestive imbalance: Gas, bloating and digestive discomfort.
* Soft, messy droppings: Increasing the risk of soiling and flystrike.
* Weight gain: Excess calories can contribute to obesity.
Know the Botanical Names
Genuine Bamboo — Bambusa genus
* Bambusa vulgaris — Common Bamboo
* Bambusa textilis — Weaver’s Bamboo
These are genuine bamboo species, but that alone doesn’t confirm their suitability for rabbits.
Sugarcane — Saccharum officinarum
Dried sugarcane and bamboo can look remarkably similar. Appearance alone cannot reliably identify them.
Why Choose Australian-Grown?
We recommend Australian-grown, locally produced rabbit chews wherever possible.
Imported plant materials may require biosecurity treatments, including fumigation, heat treatment or irradiation, before entering Australia.
Australian-grown products avoid these potential import-related treatments.
Our Advice
Never assume a chew is safe simply because it is marketed for rabbits!
Before buying, check:
* The full botanical name.
* Whether the species is suitable for rabbits.
* The product’s origin and treatment history.
If the botanical name, rabbit safety or treatment history cannot be verified — DO NOT BUY IT!
Avoid sugarcane sticks. Choose correctly identified, suitable rabbit-safe chewing materials such as untreated applewood or willow branches.
