Meet The Breed.......

Burmese

• The Burmese cat is a pedigree breed of domestic cat believed to have originated near the Thai – Burma border and was developed by selective breeding in the United States and Britain.
• Most Modern Burmese are descendants of one female called Wong Mau which was brought from Burma to the USA in 1930 and was bred with American Siamese.
• Burmese are surprisingly heavy and muscular for their size.
• They have a playful nature and develop strong bonds with their owners.
• The breed is often referred to displaying Doglike behaviours such as playing fetch and displaying Dog like devotion to their owners.
• Burmese come in a variety of colours, they have unique coat genetics due to a temperature sensitive enzyme mutation.
• Their coats are generally darker on the cooler parts of their bodies such as their face, ears and tails, and lighter on their warmer torso’s.
• Burmese make wonderful pets

Meet the Breed...
British Longhair
• British Longhair as discussed with the longhair gene in the Bengal cat the same can be said for the British Shorthair.

• We know that the longhair gene was introduced into the breed through cross breeding.

• By the 1900’s with the importation of Persians and other longhair breeds the British Shorthair had fallen out of favour and breeding stock had become critically rare by WW1.

• British Shorthair breeders mixed Persians, Russian Blues, Burmese and Chartreux into their bloodlines. Part of the introduced Bloodlines would become the basis of the British Longhair.

• The Breed is identical to the British Shorthair except for the longer, denser coat.

Meet the breed
British Shorthair
• British Shorthairs are often referred to as British Blues which was the original and is still the most popular colour but the breed comes in many different coat colours and patterns.
• The British Shorthair is the pedigree version of the landrace of the British domestic cat.
• British shorthairs have a very distinctive coat texture and breed type.
• This ancient breed was selectively bred into one of the first pedigree cat breeds at the end of the 19th century.
• No one is sure how the first cats reached the British Isles. In many parts of Europe cats became common at the same time as the spread of the Roman Empire but it appears housecats reached Britain before the Romans did.
• Over the centuries the naturally isolated descendants developed into distinctively large robust cats with a short dense coat to withstand the elements.
• Artist renditions of the Breed shows the breed is relatively unchanged from its original type.
• British Shorthairs are a slow maturing cat often taking up to 3 years to fully mature.
• Brits like to have four on the floor meaning that thay prefer to have their feet on the ground, they would also rather sit next to you than on you.
• The British Shorthair was the inspiration for the very famous Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland.

Meet the Breed
Bengal Longhairs
This breed is judged as a longhair breed in TICA - The International Cat Association, Inc.
• Genetics are a funny thing you can have a gene sitting in the background of your cats and without DNA testing you will not know that your cat carries this gene.

• This gene makes up the way your cat looks and is called a phenotype. This is what happened with the longhair gene in Bengals.

• The long hair appearance only comes out when it is matched with another longhair gene, it is called a double recessive trait, while longhair bengals are in fewer numbers at the moment, the breed is now recognised in their own right.

• Many breeders are now actively trying to breed for the longhair trait. In litters you can have both long and shorthair kittens.

Meet the Breed
Bengals

• The Bengal cat is a domestic cat breed with its ancestry tracing back to the Asian leopard cat having been bred to a domestic cat. The earliest mention of the cross breeding of the Asian Leopard Cat and a domestic cat was mentioned in Harrisons Weirs book in 1889.

• While Bengals look wild their temperament and genetic information show they have less than 2% Asian Leopard Cat in their genetics.

• Bengals come in different colours and patterns including spotted, rosetted and marbled.

• Bengals shimmer; many Bengals have a glitter gene making their coat appear as if it was dusted with gold or pearl in the light.

Meet the Breed
American Shorthair (ASH)
• The American Shorthair is believed to be descended from European cats brought to North America by the early settlers to protect the valuable cargo from mice and rats on the way to the colony.
• The ASH is referred to as working cats because of their use to control the rodent populations on the ships and farms.
• The ASH was among the first 5 breeds that were registered by the CFA in 1906.
• The ASH comes in more than 80 different colours and patterns. They have a calm, friendly and adaptable temperament. They have a short, dense and low maintenance coat.
• They are great with kids and other pets, a healthy, hardy breed they are generally quite long lived.

Cat Facts.............

The domestic cat is called Felis catus. Cats have lived alongside of humans for the last 9 to 10 thousand years.
• The earliest evidence of cats being domesticated is around 9500 years ago, a burial site on the island of Cyprus revealed a human buried alongside of a cat. This is significant because cats are not native to Cyprus, meaning humans must have brought them there which suggests strong evidence of early domestication or at least taming.
• About 10 thousand years ago humans started farming so it is believed that humans tolerated and likely encouraged a relationship with cats for pest control leading to a mutual relationship rather than forced domestication.
• About 4000 years ago we know that cats were fully integrated into society in Ancient Egypt they were revered, protected by law, and even associated with the goddess Bastet.
