The Royal Australian Navy kept cats aboard ships in both WWI and WWII, they had very essential jobs, cats provided companionship and a sense of normalcy while abroad. There are many letters and diaries from ANZAC troops that mention feeding and naming local cats.

We join Australians and New Zealanders in remembering the bravery, sacrifice, and mate ship of those who served.

🐾!!CASE OF THE WEEK!!🐾

Double bandaged bandit!

This week's case is one of our clinics own! Nurse Lilly brought Basil into the clinic due to excessive licking at both front paws and lameness. She could see splitting on the 5th toenail of each foot, running the length of the nail.

Dr Vicky examined the toes under sedation, unfortunately due to the severity of the split; both nails needed to be removed.

Sweet Bazwaz recovered with his nurse and soaked in all the royalty treatment from the team.

🐾!!CASE OF THE WEEK!!🐾

Little Chaz visited the clinic this week with sudden onset vomiting, lethargy and reluctance to eat and drink. Very unusual for this bubbly and bright character.

Dr Vicky was suspicious that our feline friend had ingested something he shouldn't have. After X-rays and Ultrasound Dr Michael performed an exploratory laparotomy and found a 3cm knotted piece of material in the intestine.

Happy as...Chaz the next day following surgery. Little man went home with some pain relief and to cuddle up with his family. 🐱

As our pets get older, you might notice they’re slowing down, hesitating on stairs, or seeming stiff after naps. While it’s easy to chalk this up to “just getting old,” it can often be a sign of arthritis or joint discomfort.
Just like people, pets can develop joint changes over time. Especially larger breeds, very active dogs, or senior cats who may hide their pain. If your pet is:
🐾 Moving more slowly on walks
🐾 Struggling to jump on furniture or into the car
🐾 Stiffness after resting
🐾 Less interested in play
🐾 Licking at joints
…it may be time for a check-up.
The good news? There are many options to help keep your pet comfortable, from joint supplements to therapeutic treatments.
Early intervention makes a big difference in maintaining mobility and quality of life. If you’ve noticed changes, give us a call or book online to schedule an appointment with one of our vets.

🧡 What Is an Aural Haematoma? 🐶
An aural haematoma is a painful swelling that forms in your pet’s ear flap (the soft part of the ear). It happens when small blood vessels inside the ear burst and blood collects between the layers of the ear flap, causing it to puff up like a pillow!
Why does it happen?
Most aural haematomas are caused by excessive head shaking or scratching. This is usually a sign that something else is irritating the ear, such as:
• Ear infections
• Allergies
• Ear mites
• Foreign material (like grass seeds)
When pets shake their heads repeatedly, the force can damage tiny blood vessels, and that’s when the swelling starts.
What does it look like?
✔️ A swollen, soft, fluid-filled ear flap
✔️ Warm to the touch
✔️ Head shaking or ear scratching
✔️ Sensitivity or pain when touched
Does it need treatment?
Yes. Aural haematomas don’t usually resolve properly on their own. Without treatment, the ear can scar and become permanently thickened also known as cauliflower ear. Treatment may involve draining the fluid or surgery, along with addressing the underlying cause, like infection.
If you notice your pet’s ear suddenly looking swollen, it’s best to have it checked as soon as possible. Early treatment means less discomfort and better healing. 🧡
