As we celebrate 80 years of Sydney Dogs & Cats Home, we’re looking back at some of the animals and people who have become part of our story along the way. 🖤

And we couldn’t think of a better place to start than Errol.

Back in 2008, Melinda and her then-boyfriend, now husband, would spend their “date days” volunteering at our shelter and walking the dogs in our care.

That’s where they met Ice.

At around 16 years old, they worried the senior dog might not have many people lining up to take him home. They had only just moved in together, but they decided to give him a chance and Ice became Errol.

He quickly became part of the family, befriending their two cats, claiming his place on the lounge and becoming something of a local celebrity. For his 18th birthday, Melinda and her husband even threw him a party at their local park, where neighbours arrived with treats to help celebrate.

Errol lived until he was almost 19.

Years later, Melinda says they still talk about him and the impact he had on their lives.

And her advice to anyone considering adoption?

“Go with the oldies.”

Over 80 years, thousands of animals have passed through our doors. Stories like Errol’s are part of the history we’re celebrating this year.

Making it into Fido's inner circle is a pretty great place to be. 💛

At just 1 year old, Fido is incredibly affectionate with the people he knows. He loves spending time with them, playing with his toys, heading out for a good sniff and handing out plenty of kisses along the way. 🐾

With new people, he needs a little more time.

Fido can still be nervous around strangers, so he's looking for people who won't rush him and are happy to let him build confidence at his own pace.

Once you're in, though? You get to meet the playful, affectionate young dog our team knows so well. 🥰

Fido would really benefit from a home with access to a yard, giving him space to decompress when he needs it. And while he'll need careful introductions, he's also open to potentially sharing his home with a suitable dog friend.

He's looking for an adult-only home with patient people who understand that trust doesn't have to happen immediately.

Because with Fido, getting to know each other is part of the good bit. 💛

Saffron believes consent applies to pats. 😂🌺

Would she like some affection? Absolutely.

Has she had enough now? She'll let you know.

At 1 year and 8 months old, Saffron is a sweet girl with a personality of her own and absolutely no problem having an opinion or two.

She can take a little time to feel comfortable around new people, but once she knows she's safe, you'll start seeing more of the Saffron our team knows. 💕

🧸 Playful when the mood strikes
🥰 Affectionate once she knows you
🐾 Happiest when allowed to do things at her own pace
🌺 Very capable of communicating when pat time is officially over

She's looking for patient people who'll respect her boundaries and give her the space to settle in without rushing her.

Saffron would ideally like to be the only pet in her new home and could live with children aged 10+ who understand when a cat is asking for a little space.

If you appreciate a cat who knows exactly what she likes and isn't afraid to communicate it, we think you and Saffron might understand each other pretty well. ❤️

Just popping Pongo back onto your feed because, well... look at him. 💛

We've shared a lot about this 2-year-old boy before, but the more time our team spends with him, the more we get to see just how affectionate he can be.

Pongo loves his food, takes his treat-chewing responsibilities very seriously and, once he's comfortable with you, is very happy to join you for cuddles on the couch. 🛋️🐾

He can still get nervous at times, so taking things slowly and giving him time to decompress is important. A home with access to a yard would be ideal, giving him his own space when he needs it.

Pongo doesn't want to share his home with another dog, although he's happy to say hello to dogs while he's out on a walk.

Basically, underneath that handsome face is an affectionate, food-loving guy who just needs people willing to get to know him at his pace.

And we think he's pretty worth getting to know. 💛

A lot can change in 80 years. But the goal remains the same.

From our years at Carlton, to our temporary home at Strathfield, and now to the beginning of a new chapter at Kurnell, each home has been part of the Sydney Dogs & Cats Home story.

This year marks 80 years of the animals, people, places and moments that have shaped who we are today.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be looking back through our history, sharing stories from across the decades and celebrating the community that has been part of our journey.

There’s a lot to look back on. And plenty still to come.

Whatever you're doing, Rambo would like to be involved. 👀🐱

Making dinner? He's interested.

Sitting on the couch? Room for one more.

Another cat getting attention? Interesting. Rambo also enjoys attention.

Going to bed? Perfect, he'll come too. 😂

At just 9 months old, Rambo is a bold, confident little guy who seems to have skipped the whole "stranger danger" phase. He's super friendly, affectionate and very happy making himself part of whatever's going on around him.

His priorities are pretty straightforward:

🥰 Attention from his humans
🐱 Attention from feline friends
🍣 Food, obviously
👀 Knowing exactly what's happening at all times
💤 Curling up beside you when the day is done

Rambo isn't looking to quietly exist in the background of someone's home.

He's ready to be properly involved. 💗

So if you've got room in your life for a confident, affectionate young cat who's planning on becoming part of absolutely everything, come meet Rambo. 🐾

Boris is approximately 90% legs and 100% convinced he's just a little puppy. 😂🐾

At 1 year old, this very handsome Great Dane x is a big, affectionate goofball who's still figuring out exactly how to operate all that dog.

His current skill set includes:

🧸 Proudly prancing around with soft toys
💨 Getting the zoomies in the yard
🥰 Being very affectionate with his people
🎓 Picking up new things pretty quickly
📏 Occasionally forgetting that he is, in fact, enormous

Boris can be a little worried at times, but does well with reassurance from his people. He's okay around other dogs, although busy, dog-heavy environments aren't really his scene.

He's also still young and hasn't had much training yet, so he's looking for someone patient and confident who is comfortable handling a large, strong dog and wants to continue teaching him all the important stuff.

Because Boris hasn't quite grasped his own dimensions yet, he's looking for an adult-only home with plenty of room for those very long legs.

Basically, if you've got the space in your home and your life for one enormous, affectionate puppy with a soft-toy obsession, Boris would very much like to fill it. 💛

Boris's profile is in the comments.
