This is one of the native bee hive that we split last week. This is likely a mating flight for the new queen. All is well for these bees and there is nothing to worry about or do anything for. 30mins later it was all settled down.

This is the bees marching into their new home. The queen wasn’t spotted but we know she is in the box as the bees are fanning to let everyone know where she is and to start the march into the box.

Time and tide wait for no man (sic). We should also add bees. While doing some prep for today’s Chirn Park Street Festival, a swarm appeared in our garden from one of our hives. Was able to cut them out of the Golden Penda and get them into their new home. Swarms are very gentle by nature and can be easily managed by a beekeeper. If you see a swarm in your yard let a beekeeper know to come and collect

Yesterday we were able to split a number of our native bees hives. These lovely gently stingless Australian bees are great pollinators for the gardens. These colonies are booming however it we only split these once a year. It is simple process to split. This was our 100th colony that we have split over the years!!!!

Spent some time grafting for some new queens. We take advantage of bees natural tendency to swarm to create queen cells. An ‘easy’ technique to learn, a tougher one to master. Looks like 17 of the 18 cells made it through day 1. The proof will be in 9 days time.

We have just bottled some or our mid/late winter honey. Likely to have some of the lovely Qld Blue gums honey that was flowering then. It has a lovely deep amber colour with a delicious flavour. Pick up some for your favourite Father’s Day present.

Our small bed potato harvest. Not huge amount and mostly medium/small size. Not really for the bees however this is the bed that we will be putting in our sunflowers in the next week or so, which the bees absolutely love. 🌻🐝🌻🐝🍯🍯
