With the cracking weather ahead for the next week. We snuck in an early split of one of our natives hives. Sadly most hives did not have enough weight to split. We split ours if they weigh more than 7 kg (pine boxes- usually 4kg empty). A lovely TC brood nest of the stingless native bees

Well that didn’t go to plan. New queen cells for upcoming season. The queen somehow managed to sneak into the same box as my grafted cell frame. They ignored most of the cells and tore down the 3 that made it. Queens are quite territorial On a positive note - 21 out 30 grafts were started on. Also get to do more grafting when the weather fines up. Looking forward to some new queens!

This is what we want to see in our colonies at this time of year. Wall to wall bees. This hive hadn’t been inspected in a while and they had started to put honey on top of the frames. When it gets opened the honey spills. All the bees are quick to clean up. After about 5 mins the honey was all removed and stored back in the frames. Chirn Park Bees
