Great post from Equine Therapy Products for anyone wondering whats going on when I bring out the red light tools 🤩

Ever wondered what's actually happening beneath the surface when you use your ETP light therapy products?

It's a question we love because once you understand the science, you'll see exactly why light therapy is so effective for so many different conditions. 🤩

Here's a simple breakdown of how our light products actually works through your horse's tissue:

🔵 The skin surface
Blue light (440-480nm) works at the most superficial level, targeting the skin, surface wounds, and inflammation close to the surface. It is antibacterial and antimicrobial, making it particularly effective for skin conditions, wounds, and surface irritations.

🔴 The muscle layer
Red light (660nm) works at a cellular level by stimulating the mitochondria to produce more ATP (the body's cellular energy). This supports circulation, tissue repair, muscle recovery, and reduction of inflammation. In horses, red light is commonly used for muscle soreness, tendon and ligament support, joint stiffness, and general performance recovery.

⚫️ Tendons, ligaments & deeper tissue
Near infrared light (700-1100nm) penetrates deepest of all. It's invisible to the eye but reaching deep into the tissue beneath heavier muscle mass. Like red light, it stimulates the mitochondria to increase ATP, helping cells repair, regenerate, and function more efficiently. In horses, NIR is particularly valuable for deep muscle soreness, tendon and ligament recovery, joint stiffness, and chronic or longstanding soft tissue issues.

At every layer, the process is the same, light energy is absorbed by the cells, converted into the energy they need to repair, recover, and function at their best. ✨

Did you know… tension doesn’t always look dramatic?
Sometimes it shows up as:

• difficulty bending one direction
• short stride behind
• resistance picking up canter
• struggling to stand square
• uneven muscle development

Horses are incredibly honest in how they move — we just need to know what to look for.

Often the small signs appear long before a horse becomes sore or resistant.

Noticing these early can make a big difference to comfort, performance and longevity.

Sometimes the smallest releases make the biggest difference ✨

This beautiful girl Loki, a Friesian mare, is a sensitive soul who tends to hold onto tension — especially through her shoulder and thoracic sling area. Horses like Loki often carry stress quietly, compensating through posture and movement until the body starts to feel restricted.

During her session, I found a key tension point just behind the shoulder — an area that plays a huge role in stride length, comfort in collection, and overall freedom through the front end.

Once the body felt safe enough to let go… this moment happened 🤍

A soft eye, lowered head, and that unmistakable look of relief.

Sensitive horses often benefit greatly from a calm, patient approach that allows them time to process each release. When we listen carefully to what their body is telling us, they show us exactly what they need.

Every horse holds their tension differently — and every release tells a story.

Today I saw a beautiful Knabstrupper, a rare breed here in WA known for expressive movement and striking spots.

Did you know that different horse breeds often develop tension in different areas?

Every breed has been developed for a purpose — whether it’s speed, collection, endurance or power — and those traits influence how their body moves, loads and compensates.

For example, this mornings lovely client horse was a Knabstrupper, a relatively rare breed here in WA. Known for their beautiful spotted coats and expressive movement, they often have naturally elevated action through the shoulder which can sometimes lead to tightness through the base of the neck, wither pocket and shoulder muscles.

Of course, every horse is an individual — but understanding breed tendencies can give us helpful clues when assessing posture, movement and muscle use.
