💧 Hydrotherapy Following Hip Dislocation in Dogs💧

Meet Pirate, a 10-year-old Bull Arab x Great Dane who dislocated his hip while enjoying a zoom around the garden. Following successful reduction of the luxation, Pirate has been attending hydrotherapy sessions to help strengthen his hind limbs and improve his mobility during recovery.

Hip luxation can result in pain, muscle loss, reduced weight-bearing, and altered gait patterns.

Rehabilitation is an important component of recovery, and hydrotherapy provides a controlled, low-impact environment that allows dogs to rebuild strength and function while minimising stress on the healing joint.

The buoyancy of water decreases the load placed on the hip joint, while the resistance of the water facilitates muscle strengthening and encourages a more normal gait pattern.

~ Hydrotherapy may assist with ~
✨Restoration of muscle mass and strength
✨Improvement in hip range of motion
✨Encouragement of appropriate limb use and weight-bearing
✨Enhancement of proprioception and coordination
✨Reduction of joint stiffness associated with inactivity
✨Maintenance of cardiovascular fitness during the recovery period

Pirate has been working hard in the underwater treadmill, and each session is helping him progress towards improved strength, mobility, and confidence on the affected limb.

Meet little Titch 🐾

Titch has been diagnosed with a grade 1–2 luxating patella, and he’s currently with us for conservative management—an approach that can be incredibly successful for the right dogs.

With a tailored home rehabilitation plan and weekly hydrotherapy sessions, Titch is working hard to build strength through the muscles surrounding his knee, improve stability, and support better movement. 💦💪

For many dogs with a luxating patella, surgery isn’t always the first or only option. A targeted rehab program can play a huge role in improving muscle strength, reducing discomfort, and helping keep them active and comfortable doing the things they love.

Titch is doing a wonderful job, and we’re so proud of the progress he’s making. 🤍🐶

The Power Behind the Poles

Cavaletti training may look simple at first glance, but when used thoughtfully they can have a powerful effect. Whether you’re guiding your post-operative dog through recovery, your senior dogs mobility or conditioning a canine athlete, a line of poles can significantly improve movement quality, coordination and body awareness. The real benefit lies in the biomechanics—how each step encourages controlled joint movement, balance and neuromuscular control. And by adjusting pole height and spacing, we can influence how the body moves and target different rehabilitation goals. #

💧 Hock Height Water 💧

~ Maximum Strengthening & Functional Loading ~

At hock height, buoyancy support is minimal and the dog bears much more of their natural body weight while still working against water resistance. This creates the highest strengthening demand.

~ Main Benefits ~
✨Increased limb loading
✨Greater muscle strengthening
✨Improved endurance and cardiovascular fitness
✨Enhanced propulsion and drive
✨Increased core stability
✨Better preparation for return to sport or normal activity

~ Best For ~
✨Advanced rehabilitation
✨Sporting and working dogs
✨Show dog conditioning
✨Return-to-performance programs
✨Late-stage post-operative strengthening

~ Muscle & Gait Effects ~
✨Stronger push-off and propulsion
✨Increased rear limb engagement
✨Greater stabilisation demands
✨More natural gait pattern

This level is often used when the goal becomes:
✨Strength
✨Performance
✨Endurance
✨Return to full activity

💧Why Water Height Matters 💧

Changing water height allows therapists to carefully control:
✨Joint loading
✨Pain levels
✨Muscle activation
✨Balance difficulty
✨Gait mechanics
✨Exercise intensity

This makes underwater treadmill therapy highly adaptable for:
✨Early rehabilitation
✨Chronic pain management
✨Neurological rehabilitation
✨Athletic conditioning
✨Senior dog mobility support

💧 Stifle Height Water

Last week we spoke about the benefits of using hip height water during hydrotherapy sessions, this week we discuss the benefits of stifle height water.

~ Balanced Support & Strengthening ~
At stifle height, the dog still receives buoyancy support, but there is increased weight bearing and muscular demand compared to deeper water.
This depth often provides the best balance between support and strengthening.

~ Main Benefits ~
✨Moderate joint unloading
✨Improved muscle activation
✨Increased core engagement
✨Better balance and proprioception
✨Encourages more normal gait mechanics
✨Builds strength while still protecting joints

~ Best For ~
✨Mid-stage rehabilitation
✨Muscle rebuilding
✨Controlled strengthening
✨Improving gait symmetry
✨Transitioning back toward full function

~ Muscle & Gait Effects ~
✨Greater quadriceps and gluteal activation
✨Improved stride consistency
✨Increased postural control
✨More active propulsion

~ This level is commonly used when dogs are progressing from:
✨Mobility restorationto
✨Functional strengthening

PACING IN DOGS — NORMAL OR A RED FLAG?

Have you ever noticed your dog moving both legs on the same side together instead of trotting diagonally?
This is called pacing — and it can be completely normal… or a sign your dog is compensating for something deeper.

When it’s fine -
If your dog:
• Paces occasionally at a relaxed walk
• Easily switches into a normal trot
• Shows no stiffness, lameness, or behaviour changes
…then it’s usually just a natural, energy-efficient gait choice. Nothing to worry about.

When it’s a concern -
Pacing becomes an issue when it’s:
• Frequent or the default gait
• New or worsening over time
• Replacing the trot altogether

In those cases, it’s often a compensation pattern, not a preference.

Dogs may pace to:
• Reduce spinal movement (common with back discomfort)
• Improve stability (core weakness or neurological issues)
• Offload a sore limb (orthopaedic pain)

Bottom line
• Occasional pacing → normal
• Persistent pacing → a sign worth investigating

At Aquapaws, we often see pacing as a clue that a dog is choosing stability over mobility — and with the right rehab program, we can help restore strength, balance, and natural movement.
If you’re unsure about your dog’s gait, feel free to reach out — early intervention makes all the difference.

💧How Underwater Treadmill Water Height Changes the Benefits for Dogs?

Water height in the underwater treadmill dramatically changes how a dog moves, loads their joints and activates their muscles. By adjusting the depth to hip, stifle or hock height, rehabilitation therapists can target different goals ranging from mobility and strength to performance conditioning.

~ Hip Height Water ~

Maximum Support & Minimal Joint Loading

When water is raised to around hip level, buoyancy supports roughly 60 - 62% of the dogs body weight. This creates the greatest unloading effect on the joints and spine.

~ Main Benefits ~

✨Significant reduction in joint compression
✨Easier movement for painful or weak dogs
✨Encourages weight bearing with less discomfort
✨Improves joint range of motion
✨Supports balance and stability
✨Allows earlier rehabilitation after injury or surgery

~ Best For ~

✨Post-operative recovery
✨Arthritis and chronic pain
✨Neurological weakness
✨Obese or severely deconditioned dogs
✨Early rehabilitation stages

~Muscle & Gait Effects ~

✨Increased hip and stifle flexion
✨Slower, more controlled gait
✨Reduced concussive forces
✨Gentle muscle activation without overload

~ Hip-height water is often used when the priority is

✨Pain reduction
✨Mobility restoration
✨Safe movement
✨Confidence building
