Paralysis Tick Reminder 🕷️🐾

We’ve seen 2 cases of paralysis tick in the past week — and while this isn’t the usual time of year for paralysis ticks, it’s an important reminder that they can still pose a risk to our pets.

Please make sure your pets are up to date with their tick prevention and check them regularly for ticks, especially after spending time outdoors.

⚠️ Signs of paralysis tick can include:
• Lethargy or unusual tiredness
• A wobbly or unsteady walk
• Weakness
• A weak or absent gag reflex
• Vomiting or retching
• Difficulty breathing or swallowing

Paralysis tick can progress quickly and can be life-threatening. If your pet is showing any of these signs, please seek veterinary attention immediately.

Prevention + regular tick checks can save lives. Please don’t wait for the usual tick season to start protecting your pets.

🐭🐶 With the colder weather here, you may start noticing more rats and mice around your home. If you are using rat bait, please make sure it is kept well out of reach of pets and always use pet-safe bait dispensers.
⚠️ Rat bait poisoning can also happen if your pet eats a poisoned rat or mouse, so it’s important to keep an eye out for dead rats and mice in your yard.
🩺 Signs of rat bait poisoning can include lethargy, weakness, pale gums, bruising or bleeding, coughing, difficulty breathing, vomiting blood, or blood in urine or faeces.
⏳ Symptoms are delayed for several days, so if you think your pet may have been exposed, contact your vet immediately. The sooner treatment starts, the better the chance of preventing more serious side effects.

Please join us in welcoming Dr Samantha Keyes to the Singleton Heights Vet Clinic team! 🎉🐱🐶

🎓 Sam graduated from the University of Sydney in 2019 and enjoys many aspects of small animal practice, with particular interests in emergency and critical care (ECC) and internal medicine. She loves a good diagnostic challenge and is always keen to learn new skills. 🩺🔍

When she's not in clinic, Sam can usually be found dancing, hiking, or exploring with her giant sidekick, Gandalf the Great Dane, who firmly believes he's a lap dog 🐾

Sam is excited to meet all of our wonderful clients and patients. Be sure to say hello when you see her around the clinic! 👋
