This week’s market update 🍓🍌🫑
Market Update 7 March 2026
Fruit Market Update
It’s Crunch Time.
Apples: The Comeback Kids
Good news for apple lovers. The apple season is slowly gathering pace, and prices are starting to edge down. You’ll see more Gala and Granny Smith apples appearing which means better flavour, better crunch, and finally prices that don’t make your wallet cry.
Pear-fect Value: Beurre Bosc
You can’t beat Beurre Bosc pears for value right now. Sweet, buttery, and excellent for eating fresh or slicing into salads. Also brilliant if you’re feeling fancy and want to roast them with a drizzle of honey and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
Nachi Pears: The Crunchy Newcomer
New-season Nashi pears are in and if you haven’t tried them yet. Just do it.
They’re super crunchy, juicy, and refreshing at $1.36 each.
How to use them:
• Slice into salads with rocket and parmesan
• Dice into slaw with cabbage and sesame dressing
• Eat like an apple when you’re pretending to make healthy life choices
Melons are The Sweet Spot of the Week
Melons of All Persuasions
If it’s round and grows on a vine, we’re probably excited about it this week.
Star performer: Orange Candy Melon
This beauty is ridiculously sweet and aromatic.
Here..https://orangecandy.com.au/recipes/
Note only recipes here but they are fabulous.
Quick idea:
Orange Candy Melon & Mint Salad
• Cube melon
• Add fresh mint
• Crumble feta
• Squeeze lime
• Drizzle olive oil
Five minutes, zero cooking, and you look like a kitchen genius.
Watermelon: Bargain of the Week
Watermelon just got even cheaper than last week at $1.49/kg.
That’s almost half the supermarket price compared to $2.90/kg at Coles.
They’re smaller this week, about $6 each, which honestly is perfect unless you’re feeding a cricket team.
Hot weather hack:
Blend watermelon + lime + ice for instant slushie happiness.
Grapes Sweet, Crunchy, hard to stop eating
Seedless grapes of any colour are good right now, but keep an eye out for Sapphire grapes.
They’re not the cheapest, but they are spectacularly crunchy and sweet.
The kind you accidentally eat half a kilo of while “just tasting one.”
Bananas Our Everyday Hero
Bananas are excellent value at $2.84/kg.
Meanwhile supermarkets are still asking about $4.90/kg, presumably to fund executive banana-polishing departments.
Stock up for smoothies, baking, lunchboxes, or the classic banana eaten while standing in the kitchen contemplating life.
Veg Market Update Some Big Wins
Avocados: The Rare Double Act
Something unusual is happening as both Shepherd and Hass avocados are available at the same time.
A tray of Shepherds is about $22, which works out at under $1 each, with 23–28 avocados per tray depending on size.
That’s basically the universe telling you to eat more guacamole.
Sweet Corn from Manuel Xerri
Grower Manuel Xerri has been producing excellent corn, selling for under $1 each.
Sweet, fresh and perfect for:
• BBQ
• Corn salsa
• Or eating straight off the cob like a slightly uncivilised champion.
Brassicas are a A Mixed Bag
Cauliflower: Still the Supermarket Hoarders
As mentioned before, supermarkets have been vacuum-cleaning cauliflower supply, which keeps prices annoying.
Caulini Flower: The Cool Cousin
The good news: Manuel Xerri has Caulini (cauliflower shoots) available.
Last week’s issue was rain as they were picked wet and oxidised.
This week? Looking great as we have eyed them.
How to use them:
• Stir fry with garlic and soy
• Roast quickly with olive oil
• Slice raw into salads
Greens & Brassicas
George Portelli has a solid range including:
• Cabbage
• Wombok
• Kale
However broccoli has tightened up, meaning supply is limited and prices are higher.
Capsicums are Good Value
Capsicums of all colours are around $6.34/kg, which is pretty reasonable compared with supermarkets sitting around $9/kg.
Perfect for roasting, stuffing, stir-fries, or pretending you’re going to meal-prep this week.
Leafy Greens
Lettuces and leafy greens are all looking good this week. Plenty available and decent quality.
Salad season is still alive.
Mushrooms are Cheap and Cheerful
Mushrooms are cheap right now, making them ideal for:
• Pasta
• Risotto
• Big breakfast fry-ups
Garlic Update
Australian garlic is starting to get soft, so we’ve switched to Argentinian garlic.
Price is about $21/kg, compared with garlic in supermarkets around $33/kg..
Final Thought
It’s a great week to load up on fruit, especially melons, watermelon, grapes and bananas. Veg-wise, avocados, corn, mushrooms and capsicums are doing the heavy lifting.
So grab a box, sharpen the knives, and happy cooking.
