Hock Shields are a hock wrap designed to ensure coverage in the stable or paddock even if your horse has an extra hard way of twisting while pushing off the ground

They can also be used for horses with arthritic hocks to prevent chills

The thin neoprene and double layer of fleece make a very comfortable but tough enough that it can be worn full-time for those horses with deep chronic sores.

Suitable to use travelling horses in trucks etc for those who object to bulky trucking boots. Available in REGULAR and ULTRA in a range of sizes.

📌I’m willing to bet that sanitizing grooming tools is not a high priority on most of your to-do lists. But, really, how often should we be cleaning our horses’ brushes?

All is individual preference. Personally, I like to clean my brushes at least once a month, and more frequently throughout winter.

However, logically, if the goal of grooming is to keep our equine partners in optimal health, then ideally, we should be using clean brushes whenever possible to maintain their overall well-being. Right?!

Neglecting to clean your brushes regularly can lead to a buildup of debris, making these grooming tools less effective in maintaining overall cleanliness of your horse. Dirty brushes can inadvertently transfer pathogens from one horse to another, potentially causing skin infections and other health issues.

▪️Cleaning your horses’ brushes, is as easy as follow these simple steps below:

✔️Tidy Up Those Brushes: First things first, let's get rid of all that loose hair and gunk that's stuck to your brushes. Grab a curry comb or just use your fingers to give then a good shake and brush-off.

✔️Soapy Bath: Now, it's time for a spa day for your brushes. Fill up a bucket with warm water and throw in a few drops of your favourite mild dish or laundry soap (the scentless kind is best). Dunk those brushes and let them soak for about 10-15 minutes, so all the stubborn dirt can loosen up.

✔️Scrub Clean: After their relaxing soak, give the bristles another good scrub using that trusty curry comb or your fingers. Keep rinsing under the tap until there's no more foam and the water's running clear.

✔️Germ Zapping: If you're feeling extra hygiene-conscious, you can zap those brushes with some disinfectant. Just mix a little water with a few drops of antiseptic solution and soak away.

✔️Dry them Out: Shake off any extra water and lay those brushes flat on a clean towel. If the sun's out, it's even better – let them soak up those rays. But no matter what, make sure they're bone dry before tossing them back in your grooming tote. We don't want any mouldy surprises.

Where possible avoiding sharing brushes. This practice is especially crucial when dealing with bacterial infections as it helps prevent the spread from one horse to another.

A small effort goes a long way in keeping your horses looking their best and feeling their healthiest, making it a win-win situation for both you and your four-legged friends. 🖤

⭐Mastering the Art of the Outside Rein

Among the myriad challenges equestrians face, there is one that should unequivocally claim the top spot: mastering the use of the outside rein. This often-underutilized and misunderstood aid holds the power to transform your riding. Let's delve into the intricacies of the outside rein and how it can elevate your horsemanship.

🔶The Hand-Fixation Bias:
Humans, as bipeds, possess an inherent hand-fixation bias. We rely on our hands for countless actions, reaching out and grasping objects as second nature. It's only natural to assume that we can steer a horse the same way we maneuver a bike—simply grab the rein on the turning side and pull, right? Wrong!

🔶The Challenge of Reprogramming:
One of the most perplexing aspects of riding is the need to reprogram our instinctive tendency to lean forward and yank on the reins. This inclination is deeply ingrained in us, making it challenging to stay balanced atop a moving horse and employ our leg and seat aids before our hands. Thus begins the arduous journey of "re-wiring" ourselves.

🔶The Elusive Outside Rein:
Among the complex concepts in riding, the use of the outside rein ranks as one of the most challenging. Riders often default to a tight inside rein and a slack outside rein, inadvertently causing the horse to stiffen on the inside and push the outside shoulder. This results in a diagonal movement along the rail, far from the desired straight path.

🔶The Solution:
The solution to mastering the outside rein lies in harmonizing the inside leg and seat bone with your aids. The oft-repeated mantra, "inside leg to outside rein," is not just about your leg; it's about the horse's balance. Encourage the horse to shift its weight to the outside by applying your inside leg. Simultaneously, your inside seat bone absorbs the thrust of the inside hind leg and promotes an even greater weight shift to the outside.

🔶Maintaining the Connection:
After establishing this newfound connection with the outside rein, it is essential to maintain it. Do not abuse it by relinquishing contact abruptly. Instead, give when needed, take when required, and resist when necessary, all in a seamless flow. Remember that a straight rein leads to a straight horse, with your legs responsible for aligning the horse's hips.

🔶Conclusion:
On your next ride, make the outside rein a focal point of your attention. Yet, remember that it's not merely about gripping the rein but about influencing the horse's entire body, ensuring it "fills" the outside rein. Once you achieve this connection, explore its potential.

Mastering the outside rein is a challenging journey, one that warrants guidance from a competent instructor capable of providing consistent, accurate feedback. 🐴
