As our pets get older, particularly if they develop arthritis, the bed they've always loved might no longer provide the support they need.

And did you know that a bed that's too soft can sometimes make getting up more difficult?

🐾 **Small changes around the home can make a BIG difference!**

As our pets get older, develop arthritis or experience mobility difficulties, everyday activities can become increasingly challenging.

Sometimes the simplest changes around the home can improve their comfort, confidence and independence.

💜 **Supportive bedding:** A good-quality orthopaedic bed can provide cushioning for ageing joints. Consider how easily your pet can get in and out of it, too!

💜 **A little extra warmth:** Many older pets appreciate a warm, cosy bed. I'm particularly fond of SnuggleSafe heat pads, which can be placed beneath suitable bedding, allowing pets to move away from the warmth when needed. Always follow the safety instructions.

💜 **Ramps and steps:** Getting into vehicles or onto furniture can become difficult. A sturdy ramp with a non-slip surface can make a real difference.

💜 **Non-slip flooring:** One of my favourite recommendations! Carpet runners, rubber-backed mats and non-slip surfaces in high-traffic areas can help pets feel more secure, particularly those with hindlimb weakness or arthritis.

💜 **Food and water bowls:** Adjusting the height or position of bowls may make mealtimes more comfortable. Raised bowls aren't suitable for every pet, so consider their individual needs.

And let's not forget **behavioural enrichment!** Making the home more accessible gives our pets more opportunities to explore, investigate, interact with their families and enjoy everyday activities.

After all, mobility support isn't always about wheelchairs, braces or harnesses. It's also about making their everyday environment easier and more comfortable to navigate.

🐾 **Your dog doesn't have to stop walking before mobility support can help!**

One of the most common misconceptions I encounter is that a dog needs to lose the use of their legs completely before a wheelchair becomes an option.

Nothing could be further from the truth!

I often encourage pet owners to consider mobility support **while their dog is still walking**, rather than waiting until they're really struggling.

Think of a wheelchair a little like a walking frame for a person. The aim isn't necessarily to replace movement, but to provide support and stability so they can continue moving with greater confidence.

A correctly fitted wheelchair can allow a dog to continue using their own legs, while the wheels take some of the load.

And the benefits go beyond simply getting around!

💜 **Exercise:** Helping maintain muscle activity and joint movement.

💜 **Toileting:** Making it easier to get outside and attend to everyday needs.

💜 **Rehabilitation:** Supporting appropriate movement as part of a rehabilitation programme.

💜 **Enrichment:** Opportunities to sniff, explore, play and enjoy the world around them.

💜 **Independence:** Helping pets remain active participants in family life.

Of course, wheelchairs aren't intended for all-day use, and every dog's needs are different.

Other mobility aids, including supportive harnesses, braces and traction aids, can also make a difference.

After more than 30 years in veterinary nursing, one thing I firmly believe is that **we shouldn't wait until our pets have lost their independence before exploring ways to support them.**

🐾 **Their legs might be slowing down, but their minds don't have to!**

When our dogs start experiencing mobility difficulties, it's natural to concentrate on their physical needs. We look at ways to help them stand, walk and move around more comfortably.

But what about their emotional and behavioural wellbeing?

Just because a dog can no longer enjoy long walks, chase a ball or explore quite as freely as they once did, doesn't mean their need for mental stimulation, companionship and enjoyment has disappeared.

In fact, this is when enrichment can become even more important!

And the lovely thing is, enrichment doesn't have to be complicated or expensive.

💜 **Scent games:** Encourage your dog to use their nose to find treats or explore interesting smells.

💜 **Food puzzles:** Turn mealtimes into an opportunity for gentle problem-solving.

💜 **Interactive toys:** Choose activities suited to your dog's physical abilities that encourage curiosity and engagement.

💜 **Gentle training:** Learning something new, even a simple behaviour, can provide mental stimulation and strengthen your relationship.

💜 **Comfort enrichment:** Opportunities to sniff, lick, chew or simply enjoy relaxing activities can be just as rewarding.

The important thing is to adapt activities to your dog's individual abilities, comfort and interests. Enrichment should be enjoyable, not physically exhausting or frustrating.

After all, helping our pets enjoy life isn't just about keeping them moving. It's about giving them opportunities to continue doing the things that make life interesting and rewarding.

Have you noticed your dog taking a little longer to get up, struggling on slippery floors or finding walks a bit harder than they used to?

It's easy to put these changes down to getting older, but sometimes there are ways we can help make everyday activities easier for our dogs.

Depending on what's happening, mobility support may include a harness to help with standing, a brace, a wheelchair or other equipment suited to their individual needs.

Every dog is different, and the first step is understanding what they're struggling with.

Physio and protecting our pets’ muscle and joint health doesn’t have to start when something goes wrong.

And it doesn’t always mean reaching for supplements or waiting until we see signs of pain, weakness or reduced mobility.

There are things we can do earlier to help maintain strength, movement and physical function throughout our pets’ lives — whether that’s through appropriate exercise, conditioning, enrichment, weight management or simply encouraging them to keep moving in ways that suit them.

Prevention and maintenance can be just as important as rehabilitation.

Because helping our pets stay strong and mobile isn’t only about what we do when there is a problem. It’s about supporting the body they have, so they can keep doing the things they love for as long as possible. 🐾

🐾 A question I’m asked all the time…

“Is there a lifting harness I can leave on my dog, so I can help them up when they need me?”

It’s a great question — and the answer isn't quite as simple as you might think!

Most rear-only lifting harnesses need to be put on when assistance is required. But the Help ’Em Up Harness is designed differently, with front and rear support that can remain fitted during the day.

💜 So, is it right for every dog? No.

But for some dogs who need regular assistance getting up, it can make everyday life so much easier.

🎉 **Coming Soon to HandicappedPets Australia & Pets Need A Life Too!**

I’m very excited to announce that I’ll soon be stocking the **Help ’Em Up Harness** in Australia! 🐾

The Help ’Em Up is a full-body lifting harness designed to help people safely support and assist dogs who have difficulty standing, walking, getting up, using stairs, or getting in and out of the car.

I’ve been wanting to add this harness to my range for some time, and I’m particularly pleased to now be able to offer it alongside the other mobility products I provide to pet owners, veterinary practices, rehabilitation professionals and other pet health professionals.

With my background as a veterinary nurse and my ongoing work with animals with mobility challenges, I know how important it can be to have the **right support product for the individual animal — and to have someone available to help with choosing, fitting and using it properly.**

VALE Charlie 💔
Some patients stay with you long after their journey ends. Charlie was one of them.
I first met him after he had been unable to walk for six weeks following trauma to his rear paws. His family chose to fight for his quality of life — and fight they did. With custom prosthetics for his back legs and a wheelchair to keep him mobile, Charlie rediscovered movement. More than that, he rediscovered joy.
His photo now graces my business postcard. Even in a still image, his joie de vivre is unmistakable — that bright, determined spark that came through in every update his family shared. The videos they sent of him exploring, playing, and simply living were pure gifts.
To Charlie’s family: I know the house feels emptier today. Please know how deeply he was loved — not only by you, but by everyone who had the privilege of watching him thrive. He left an imprint that will not fade.
Rest easy, beautiful boy. It was an honour.
