๐Ÿพ **Happy Easter from Dr Lauren Mobile Vet!** ๐Ÿพ

A quick reminder to keep your furry family members safe over the holidays:

๐Ÿซ **Chocolate** (especially dark or cooking chocolate) is toxic to pets โ€” it contains both caffeine and theobromine, which can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, restlessness, tremors, seizures and even be life-threatening
๐Ÿฐ **Hot cross buns** containing sultanas/raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs โ€” there is *no safe amount*
๐ŸŒธ **Easter lilies** are extremely dangerous for cats โ€” even small exposures like licking pollen off their fur or drinking vase water can lead to kidney failure

๐Ÿšจ If your pet may have been exposed to any of these, please seek veterinary care immediately.

Enjoy the long weekend, stay safe, and give your pets an extra cuddle from us! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿ’›

๐ŸŽ„๐Ÿถ Christmas Foods That Are Dangerous for Dogs โ€” Keep Them Safe This Holiday!

The festive season is full of delicious treatsโ€ฆ but many classic Christmas foods can be toxic or harmful for dogs.
Hereโ€™s what to keep well out of pawโ€™s reach:

๐Ÿšซ Grapes & Sultanas
Found in fruit mince pies, Christmas cake, and pudding โ€” even tiny amounts can cause kidney failure.

๐Ÿšซ Chocolate
A favourite for humans, but dangerous for dogs. Dark chocolate is the worst offender.
Symptoms include vomiting, tremors, and heart issues.

๐Ÿšซ Cooked Bones
Christmas roasts = lots of leftover bones. Cooked bones splinter easily and can cause choking or internal injury.

๐Ÿšซ Onion, Garlic & Leek
Common in stuffing and gravy โ€” these can damage red blood cells and cause anaemia.

๐Ÿšซ Alcohol
Even small amounts in spilled drinks or desserts can lead to dangerous drops in blood sugar, body temperature, or coordination.

๐Ÿšซ Macadamia Nuts
Popular in festive treats such as shortbread biscuitsโ€” toxic to dogs and can cause weakness, tremors, and vomiting.

๐Ÿšซ Xylitol (Artificial Sweetener)
Found in sugar-free lollies, baked goods, and some peanut butters. Can cause life-threatening hypoglycaemia.

๐ŸŽ Keep your dog safe by:
โœ” Keeping food-laden tables out of reach
โœ” Asking guests not to feed scraps
โœ” Storing gift bags and food hampers securely
โœ” Offering pet-safe festive treats instead

If youโ€™re ever unsure or think your dog may have eaten something dangerous, contact a vet immediately.

๐ŸŽ„๐Ÿฑ Christmas Trees & Curious Cats โ€” What You Need to Know!

The Christmas season is full of sparkleโ€ฆ and if you live with a cat, you know that means one thing:
your tree is now their new climbing gym. ๐Ÿ˜ผ๐ŸŒฒ

But Christmas trees can actually pose several dangers for cats. Hereโ€™s what to watch out for:

โœจ Tinsel & Ribbons
Cats love to bat and chew at shiny things, but these can cause serious intestinal blockages if swallowed.

โœจ Tree Needles
Real or artificial, needles can irritate the mouth and stomach โ€” and even cause vomiting.

โœจ Water in the Tree Stand
This water can contain fertilisers, bacteria, or chemicals that are unsafe for pets.

โœจ Fragile Ornaments
Glass baubles can easily break and cause cuts or be swallowed.

โœจ Electric Lights
Chewing cables = risk of electric shock.

โœจ Climbing Hazards
A determined kitty can topple a tree and injure themselves in the process.

How to keep your cat safe:
โœ”๏ธ Avoid tinsel and string-like decorations
โœ”๏ธ Use shatterproof ornaments
โœ”๏ธ Cover the tree water
โœ”๏ธ Secure the tree to prevent falls
โœ”๏ธ Unplug lights when youโ€™re not home
โœ”๏ธ Provide lots of safe cat toys as distraction

Letโ€™s keep the holidays merry, bright, and vet-visit-free ๐Ÿ˜บโค๏ธ๐ŸŽ„

๐ŸŒผ๐Ÿพ Seasonal Allergies Are Here โ€” Is Your Pet Feeling It?

Spring and summer are beautifulโ€ฆ but not always for our pets!
Just like us, dogs and cats can develop seasonal allergies triggered by pollen, grasses, dust mites, and even mould.

Common signs to watch for:
โœ”๏ธ Itchy skin or paws
โœ”๏ธ Redness, rashes, or hot spots
โœ”๏ธ Recurrent ear infections
โœ”๏ธ Watery eyes or sneezing
โœ”๏ธ Excessive licking or chewing

Allergies can make pets miserable, but the good news is โ€” theyโ€™re very manageable with the right treatment plan.

As a mobile vet, I can assess your pet in the comfort of your home, prescribe appropriate medications, and help you build a personalised long-term allergy management plan.

๐ŸŽ†๐Ÿพ Thunderstorms & Fireworks: Helping Your Dog Cope with Noise Anxiety ๐Ÿพ๐ŸŽ†

Loud noises from thunderstorms and New Yearโ€™s Eve fireworks can be terrifying for dogs, but there are ways to help ease their anxiety. Here are some tips to keep your furry friend calm:

๐ŸŒฉ๏ธ Create a Safe Space: Set up a quiet, cozy area where your dog can retreatโ€”like a crate covered with blankets or a quiet room.

๐ŸŽถ Drown Out the Noise: Play calming music, white noise, or turn on the TV to help mask thunder and fireworks.

๐Ÿงธ Provide Comfort: Itโ€™s okay to soothe your dog with gentle pets and a calm voiceโ€”reassurance can help them feel safe.

๐Ÿ• Distract & Engage: Offer puzzle toys, treats, or a favorite activity to shift their focus from the noise.

๐Ÿ’Š Plan Ahead: If your dog struggles with severe noise phobia, speak to your vet about medications, or behavioral therapy.

Donโ€™t let loud celebrations or storms ruin the holidays for your pet. Weโ€™re here to help!
