“The horse gives you everything, you just have to be good enough to deserve it.” — Ludger Beerbaum

Sport and equine psychology is a fascinating space. As riders, athletes, and humans, we naturally place expectations on ourselves and our horse, we set goals, measure progress, and strive for results.

But in the saddle, within this partnership of two, only one truly understands those expectations and pressures — the rider. The horse does not know if it has answered a question incorrectly, or not well enough. It does not know your goals. It only knows how you feel.

And often, that feeling speaks louder than any physical aid.

Our emotional state shapes the horse’s response far more than we realise. The ability to quiet expectations, to resist self-punishment after a mistake, and to simply try again, that is what separates elite athletes. Not just talent or determination, but emotional control: the capacity to self-regulate, to stay present, and to leave frustration out of the partnership.

Because when a horse and rider truly connect, the conversation between them becomes almost invisible, quiet, subtle, yet incredibly powerful.

Watch the YouTube link if you’d like to see Thoroughbreds are Go episode where Caroline Searcy interviews Victoria Fellowes discussing the intricacies of bringing a thoroughbred into work post racing.

Around 14 minutes in is the segment on Vic and Hillview, our approach to life after racing, understanding the thoroughbred brain and body.

With a shout out to George Hunt and Nichole Fitzpatrick for the large part they play in the success.

Searching for a unicorn for a client.
- no thoroughbreds
- Can have a week or two off and still be the same horse.
- 5* home, horse will want for nothing.
- Older generation very capable lady rider who needs to be able to bring in and enjoy her ride, after a few surgeries and joint replacements needs a kind safe pleasant ride. She likely once taught a few of the now top riders, rides very correctly and confidently, and knows horses like the back of her hand.
- Would be used for clinics, lessons, dressage, jumping if the right horse, and trail riding. On a professional yard.

No soundness or health issues at all! She’s had to see the last two retire with soundness/health issues and we don’t want that again. (OTTBs)

Dm me if you have a unicorn 🦄

Here’s 5 photos of the golden girl, because well. She’s amazing and the golden child so she gets the most 💛🫶🏼 bringing home 3rd and 5th place out of 28 horses. With 71/72% scores. Looking forward to stepping her up to Novice next outing.

The lovely grey is Felix The Cat owned by who spontaneously let me take the reins for a few days! Felix is a true gentleman who doesn’t put a foot wrong. Unfortunately the judges didn’t like a beautiful respectful relaxed consistent test. 🤷🏼‍♀️ wasn’t their cup of tea that day apparently.

And then last but least forgettable was RAZZLE 😈😈😈😈😈😈😈 who was extremely wild, almost didn’t get a lift back home, almost got banished to the rodeo grounds and forgotten about. (Kidding, kind of). Finally I think people believe me when I say “it really can buck when it wants to”. As well as leaping into the air like a Spanish dancing horse….. there was not a lot of dressage that was worth remembering out of him that day. At least I’ve still got the ability to stay on. But he still made me smile and that’s what it’s all about at the end of the day.

Thank you to for dedicating her day to take photos at we really are so lucky to have such a talented photographer locally.

Very proud of my Hillview students who also improved in many ways as well!

On Saturday I took some regular Hillview students out cross country schooling at Denman. It was a great morning! Looking forward to the clinic I am hosting there over the June long weekend. The water will be filled, the canteen will be open, and it is a fantastic opportunity to school before the annual event. DM me for the link to book.

Warburton Estate Agents Upper Hunter Dressage Championships welcomes new sponsor Hillview Equine .

THANK YOU.

Nestled in the heart of the Upper Hunter, Hillview Equine is a boutique agistment, breeding, and coaching facility dedicated to the highest standard of care for mares, foals, spelling, and performance horses.

Family-run by Victoria Farr and Bayley Fellowes, Hillview Equine combines decades of hands-on experience with a calm, professional environment tailored to each horse’s individual needs. From breeding and foaling down through to spelling, injury recovery, schooling, and performance development, every horse receives meticulous daily management, expert oversight, and genuine attention to detail.
Hillview Equine offers world-class facilities, including a newly constructed 60 × 40 m ebb-and-flow arena with a full course of show jumps, purpose-built foaling stables, and expansive, safe paddocks. The arena’s consistent all-weather surface allows horses and riders to train confidently year-round, even after significant rainfall.

Coaching at Hillview Equine is led by Victoria Farr, whose approach focuses on confidence, clarity, and measurable progress for both horse and rider. Known for her ability to work successfully with young, quirky, sensitive, and sharp horses — as well as nervous or returning riders — Vic provides structured, achievable training plans, clear exercises between lessons, and a strong emphasis on mindset alongside technical development.

Vic has ridden and worked internationally for Australian Olympians Matt Ryan and Christopher Burton, trained in Germany under Tara Schneider, and travelled extensively throughout Europe with Andrew Hoy, producing horses for herself and clients across multiple disciplines. Her coaching philosophy centres on steady, sustainable improvement, ensuring riders leave the arena feeling more confident, purposeful, and supported.
Our philosophy is simple: exceptional care, working with experts and quality resources, transparent communication, and pride in every horse under our management.

It’s clipping time ✂️✂️ if your hairy mammoth needs a bit of a shave to be a naked mammoth get in touch! (Yep it really is already....)
We can do full clips, blanket clips, half clips, 3/4 clips, heads on / half heads, trace clips, saddle pads on. And while we’re at it we can pull manes and tidy tails if needed.
We do this in two ways;
1. You deliver us a very clean, washed and dried horse ready to clip, we clip and then you post wash said horse.
2. Your pony gets a true Hillview spa day, where you deliver us a muddy hairy yak, and we will spring clean, de yak, and then finish with a beautiful hot oil treatment to really pamper and hydrate that post clip coat. 😍

We can clip offsite on application, however due to time constraints and the unreliability of off site facilities we cannot guarantee this option. We have many testimonials from clients who have trusted us with their clips :)

Reach out to us for your winter preparation.
We can clip everything from shetlands, performance horses, racehorses, through to Clydesdales.

We only use the very best clippers, have multiple clipping options for the hair length to be left on or fully taken off. We have large clippers, small clippers, and everything in between. No waiting for clippers to cool down, or faffing about getting them working. Just a perfect clip EVERY time.

We take great pride in our clip jobs and looking after your pride and joy whilst we do so. We have availability this week ahead of Upper Hunter Dressage Association Inc members day, or ahead of the many equine events upcoming in Scone, (horse sports, the parade, pony club, eventing etc).
