HENDRA VIRUS CASE ALERT-NEWCASTLE REGION

NEC has been notified of a positive Hendra case in the Newcastle suburbs area. The unvaccinated horse had a rapid progression of symptoms from inappetence to neurological signs to collapse within 24 hours. This is the first positive Hendra case in the Newcastle region and the first case of the Hendra variant in NSW. Given the large population of bats in our area, this is not unexpected and certainly a wakeup call for horse owners in the Lower Hunter to please vaccinate your horses.

Current vaccines are protective for the Hendra variant, but unvaccinated horses are at high risk.
Vaccination continues to be the best way to protect your horse and family from Hendra virus and involves three initial doses then an annual booster. Please ring the clinic if you have questions regarding Hendra or check out the NSW DPI website for information regarding Hendra virus.

We were trying to take some photos of our farm yesterday and thought we’d share our gorgeous guest Flo, and her curious nature. She was definitely not camera shy, and why would she be, I mean, look at her! I for one am smitten Tracey. The pair are just lovely.

Vaccinating for Hendra Virus

The recent case of Hendra around the Scone area has understandably shaken the Hunter region regarding the vulnerability of the horses and their owners in our area. As we know more about this particular case, we will pass on the information to our clients to better understand how the exposure occurred. Meanwhile, in response to the concerns of our clients, NEC will be discounting Hendra vaccinations and microchips (if required) for the next few months to enable horse owners to vaccinate their horses if they wish to provide a safe buffer of protection for their children, themselves and their beloved horses. We have a number of free travel days to many areas of the Hunter, Central Coast and Northern coastal regions to make this a cost-effective way of providing a measure of safety for horses and their owners in the region. Position Vacant
We are looking for someone who would like to to do the agistment feeding at our farm on both Saturdays and Sundays morning & night, as well as pick up the manure in each paddock one day of the weekend. Approximately 7
hours spread across the weekend.
Would suit someone wanting to agist a horse with us.
