You know a Labrador is sick when they don’t want to eat 🥺 See Willow rejecting chicken.
Darling Willow spent the better part of a week at SEV after she decided to eat some plastic, rope and towelling leading to what we refer to as a linear foreign body where loops of small intestine concertina together while the foreign material remains firmly anchored in the stomach.
Multiple incisions, removal of all the foreign material and some necrotic bowel later and Willow has gradually made her way to full recovery.
That wagging tail means everything.
🩷🩷🩷
We suspect there was something yummy on all those bits and pieces wherever she found it . But definitely not worth it.
Willow is now back with her adoring family x

Gastrointestinal foreign body’s.
It can happen so easily. And they cause such devastation . So what types of foreign bodies do we retrieve ?
Hmmmm 🤔

Bras
Tampons
Rope
String
Needles and thread
Gardening gloves
Socks
Rocks
Jocks
Bones
Toys
Chew sticks/ raw hide
Corn cobs
Macadamia nuts in their shells
Towels
Tea towels
Plastic bags
Rubber matting
Carpet
Coins
Tinsel
Bolts and screws
Nails
Wood
Sticks
Mulch
Keys
Wool
Fishing line
Hooks
Fishing sinkers
Tick collars
Any collars

Only limited by your imagination here. We’ve seen it all.
Puppies are obviously curious and playful and will naturally want to chew everything so they are at highest risk but don’t be fooled. We do surgery at every age and stage.
And why do our pets ingest things they shouldn’t. The answer is simple. Because they can. Some get literally obsessed about certain objects and never seem to stop no matter how many surgeries they have. They’ll eat anything and everything anytime. This is called Pica.
So if your furbaby stops eating, vomits, regurgitates, looks sad and lethargic and has abdominal discomfort they may have eaten something from the above list or a combination thereof or indeed something unique.
The good news is a patient can be induced to vomit up the offending item if freshly ingested. Otherwise it’s surgical extraction.
So please 🙏 seek Vet help ASAP if you’re concerned.

Thank you 🙏🩷😢 so much to Wes and Meegan and the wonderful Taylor family for sharing their beautiful Zoes’s last day riding in the morning sunshine with her Dad.

The beautiful tragic irony of loving a pet is knowing one day you have to be parted. But the beauty in having that soul in your life is unmatched.

As Vets and Veterinary support staff we can be privileged enough to know our patients from when they are babies. We can be privileged enough to then see them through difficult times during their life. They become family. And when the time comes, we are ultimately entrusted to help make their final journey loving, kind and caring.
It’s a responsibility never taken lightly.
