Some interesting research into nosebands. Iโ€™m hoping this will be extended to cover the grackle and also brand specific anatomical bridles.

For the past four years, we have investigated the pressures beneath different nosebands when adjusted from 2.0 to 0.0 finger tightness (0.0 finger adjustment so that the noseband was touching but not compressing the skin).

Poor noseband adjustment could create high pressures that may risk pain or tissue damage. This study is a step forward in providing quantitative data relating to pressures associated with noseband type and fit when adjusted to various tightnessโ€™s.

๐ŸดNo significant difference between noseband pressures when the noseband was adjusted from 2.0 to 1.5 finger tightness.

๐ŸดNoseband pressures were highest on the mandible vs. the lateral aspect of the nasal bones.

๐ŸดNo differences were found in noseband pressures between the cavesson, flash or Swedish (crank) noseband types at 2.0 to 0.5 finger tightness.

๐ŸดThe Drop noseband had the lowest absolute nasal pressures (mandible pressures not measured) and significantly lower values than the other nosebands. We need to be mindful of the position of the traditional drop. More work needed.

๐ŸดNoseband pressures were lower when ridden in trot, compared with when chewing a treat.

๐ŸดNoseband pressures were cyclical (rise and fall) and not continuous โ€“ changing during the stride and the chewing cycle of the horse.

As always, this is a team effort. Thank you to our research assistants, riders, owners and horses.. Thank you to our funders, World Horse Welfare, British Equestrian, Canadian Sport Horse Association, The Worshipful Company of Saddlers and Hartpury University.

NB image taken from pilot testing and was not included in the main study. All noseband types are described in detail in the manuscript.

It's HOT HOT HOT!!

Well it's been a stinker outside. Please stay safe with your horses and watch out for heat stress. Clinical signs to monitor in horses include elevated re**al temperature, depression, dehydration, increased respiratory rate, slow capillary refill times, decreased pulse pressure, intestinal stasis, muscle spasms and cramps, which can progress to exertional rhadbomyolysis, renal failure, liver dysfunction and laminitis without immediate and appropriate treatment including cooling and fluid therapy. The early recognition and treatment of heat stress is critical as the disease can result in death if left untreated. Rapid cooling is the mainstay of treatment in combination with sedation and circulatory support. Please contact us immediately if you have any concerns but commence continuous cold hosing until we can evaluate your horse.

Exercising Horses Safely in Summer โ˜€

As Summer is now in full swing, we want to share with you an article from Horses and People giving advice on prevention of dehydration, heat stress and heat exhaustion.

Hot weather can present a challenge to horses, especially if they are competing, are old or overweight, or have existing health problems. Sensible management in hot weather can help reduce the risk of heat-related problems.

Horses can acclimatise to perform in the heat, but only if they are exercised in the heat. When acclimatised, horses will be at less risk of heat-related illness, but exercise capacity will still be reduced, compared with the capacity for exercise in cooler weather.

Learning to identify the signs of heat-related illness, knowing how to cool horses effectively and when to call for veterinary help can save lives. Follow the link to learn about all the signs and tips to bring your horse through summer: https://horsesandpeople.com.au/tips-for-exercising-horses-safely-in-summer/
