The idea behind Helping Paw SMBI Inc. Want to help?

Our aim is to promote the welfare of pets on the islands by supporting their owners who might be doing it tough in the current economic climate. came from a news article on the ABC. It pointed out that, in the current cost-of-living crisis, people were going without their own food to ensure that their pets were fed. It offered a simple solution for anyone interested in helping – starting up a pet

food bank, where people could get free food for their pets, thereby saving their money to feed themselves. We approached a couple of people on the islands who are active in the welfare space for advice. We also contacted Ned from Aunty Alice’s Cafe, who happily agreed to support us by letting us use her annex as a drop-off location. After the great response we received from the community after the first event, we approached 8th Sense Kitchen who were also happy to support us. We have since had monthly collections at each location. We’ve also had some generous donations from Loveable Pets, Special Pets, Macleay Pets Plus, and Bay Islands Veterinary Service. We’ve been distributing our donations at the monthly community hubs on Russell Island and Macleay Island. We also accept referrals from pet shops, vets, local politicians, police, and other welfare organisations. What we’re doing now

We always suspected that we’d reach a point of ‘donor fatigue’, and with that in mind, we became an incorporated association at the end of September. As such, we still accept donations of pet food through local businesses, but can now also conduct fund-raising activities and apply for grants. We have also applied to be registered as a charity under the ACNC, and beyond that, are hoping to obtain DGR status with the ATO. Our first big fund-raiser is ‘Santa Paws’ at Aunty Alice’s on Sunday 15 December. Sue and Donna from Property Centre SMBI have sponsored our first prize in the raffle that will be drawn that day. Our other sponsors include Loveable Pets, Oasis Direct, Talking Heads, RIBS and the Russell Island Servo. We'll be selling tickets between now and then, so please grab a couple when you have the chance! We will also have a dunking machine, a best-dressed dog competition and Christmas pet photos, and Ned will be donating $1 from every coffee old to our cause. Our future plans

Our goal for this financial year is to continue the pet food bank and to set up and fund a pet desexing program. This would be available to people on low incomes. As desexing is something that is encouraged by all levels of government, we’re hoping that we can get a grant to match our other fund-raising efforts. The National Desexing Network has offered to support us with this. We would also like to set up a temporary foster program. This would provide short-term care for pets whose owners have been admitted to hospital, are escaping domestic violence, or who are struggling to find affordable, pet-friendly accommodation. This would rely heavily on volunteers, so we would need to expand our organisation and its human resources considerably before this could happen. 🐈🐈 CAT OWNERS IN NEED 🐈🐈

We have a lot of cat food that has passed, or is nearing, it's expiry date. We've contacted the manufacturers, and they said that it's fine to eat, but it does lose some nutritional value over time. If you are genuinely struggling with the costs of feeding your cat, send us a message or email us at [email protected] with information on what type of food your cat prefers/needs. We've got plenty of kitten food, and some special diet foods.

The first one especially! The only thing we'd add is that it's also peak breeding season, particularly for cats. If you didn't get your pets desexed over winter, book them in now!

Coochiemudlo Island locals rally against Redland City Council’s strict dog-walking rules, citing heavy enforcement and limited access.

Response from Shane Rendalls to our email yesterday (see previous post). He seems to have missed the point and strayed somewhat off-topic, but the upshot seems to be that there is not enough funding allocated in the budget to properly deal with the roaming dog issue. FYI (and in line with the RSPCA position below) we do not condone the use of shock or e-collars to 'train' dogs to remain on their property.

'Thank you for your response Sarah. I note that your comments are in respect to Russell Island in particular. Division 5 also includes the other SMBI islands and Redland Bay.

Roaming dogs and off lead dogs are two separate issues, and I suspect different groups of owners and dogs.

The purpose of the post is to commence the dialogue with the community as to pros and cons and potential sites. The process of changing local laws is long and will involve extensive community consultation.

In respect to roaming dogs, officers do follow up, but without on island animal control officers on the islands able to respond quickly these dogs are often not where they were reported to be when officers attend and are difficult to identify when the owners are not known.

The issue of additional staff on the islands is a budget issue and is also compounded by the need to cover four islands, constrained by barge/ferry timetables and availability.

In the cases of renters unable to ensure secure accommodation I would be happy to discuss with you the potential for funding temporary fencing that can be used to train dogs to stay in the yard.

I have also requested from council, on island – particularly Russell and Macleay

Dog traps (we have cat traps on the islands
Monitored animal cages on the islands where captured animals can be housed pending pick up by animal control officers

I, myself have attended properties and collected dogs that have entered properties and attacked other pets. The challenge here was holding them until officers were back on the island.'

Collar-mounted devices capable of delivering an electric shock to the neck (electric shock collars) are designed to deliber...

Here is a copy of the letter we have sent Shane Rendalls in response to his call for suggestions regarding unfenced, off-leash dog parks (comments were quickly closed as usual):

Hi Shane,

We are writing in response to your Facebook post of 26 August 2025 regarding unfenced, off-leash dog parks in Division 5.

We are strongly of the view that Division 5 does not need more unfenced off-leash dog parks, particularly on the islands. There is an existing park located at Sandy Beach, Russell Island, that people are afraid to use because of the many reports of dogs being attacked and killed by roaming dogs.

The real issue of the islands is roaming dogs. We have spoken to you about this on several occasions, with no result as far as we can see. We have also raised this with Rebecca Young, and she is mystified as to why there are so many council animal control employees on Coochiemudlo Island, but so few on the SMBI.

Responsible pet owners who want to exercise their dogs need to be able to safely walk their dog on-lead on the street. This is a basic requirement that is not being met by council.

We want to see more enforcement of existing laws. We want pet owners to be able to walk their dogs safely, without worrying about their dog - or themselves - being attacked by one of the many roaming dogs of the islands. We want to see this being done proactively, not necessarily as a result of a complaint from the public that may - or may not - be actioned.

Reproduction 101 👩‍🎓
*75% of kittens born outdoors die or disappear before the age of 6 months. Stop the cycle of suffering before it starts.

🐈 Kittens come from other kittens. Males and females can reach sexual maturity at only 4 months of age and can start mating.

🐈 Kittens come from sick cats. Diseases can be passed along from mother to kitten in these instances.

🐈 Kittens come from "free kittens" who never got sterilized.

🐈 Kittens come from outdoor cats, 85% of them. But that means 15% come from indoor pets.

🐈 Kittens come from low-income areas where people don't realize there may be resources to help them.

🐈 Kittens come from unaltered cats and kittens who are rehomed.

🐈 Kittens come from cats who are left behind when their owner moves.

🐈 Kittens come from cats that breed within their own feline families causing genetic disorders, deformities and illnesses.

🐈 Kittens come from mother cats who have had litter after litter after litter. After so many litters, the health of the kittens are usually compromised.

Only 1️⃣ thing solves all of these - Spay and Neuter. Use google to search for low-cost clinics or TNR assistance in your local area. Don't wait until the middle of kitten season to reach out. Look for info now. Get on waiting lists now.
