Nice little Cast and Barshoe fitted to a Qtr crack due to injury to Bulb/Coronary area . Severe Damage to this area causes major disruption to the structure of the Hoof Wall / Lamellae below .
Important part of the healing process is controlling the ground forces and maintaining Mechanics and adding not removing integrity of the hoof capsule.

This technique has changed the way I look at horses and made my day to day work as a farrier, rider and trainer easier 👍

Effect of Toe length!

Farriers can influence where the ground reaction force enters the hoof. Horses already do this to an extent with conformation. Very upright horses have a close ground reaction force, which creates small forces in the tendon. Horses with a long sloping pastern have a ground reaction force vector that is longer, with larger forces in the tendon. With a longer toe, the ground reaction force moment arms get bigger, and force on the tendon grows (Figure 2). Calculations show that 1 centimeter of toe length in an average Thoroughbred comes to 50 kilos of force acting on the tendons. (American Farriers Journal)

Today we tried out the new 3d printed Hoof pads sourced by one of my local , forward thinking, broad minded trainers here in town . This racehorse has had some previous DDF pathology and low heel conformation.
These pads are a compromise for me and said trainer between elevated Heartbars with Equipak . Looking forward to seeing the results
In my opinion these should prove a valuable “tool” in any Farriers kit . Scott Rodgers Derek Poupard

This is cool our student was pulling a shoe off a cadaver leg and the whole hoof capsule came off in one easy pulling of a nail.. What's interesting is the thrush between the bulbs is going right through .. it wasn't torn at all I could stick a E10 nail right through it .. do we take thrush too lightly??

This is a great video showing what happens to the pivot point, the navicular bone when hoof is effected by gravity and the basal surface area is not set up well for the individual horse.

This case was presented to me today with some stifle issues . Apon assessment the large scar on the o/f caught my eye . One might think the transfer of weight to the opposite and the diagonal limbs over a long period of time during an injury like this would likely cause some issues. The hinds (especially the diagonal of the affected) were severely broken back (slam dunk ) whatever u wish to call it . With a slight rocker , " lightly " flattening the heels and removing toe from the widest point forward an acceptable dorsal palmar angle is achieved . The shoe is nothing flash just slightly rugged and put in the right spot. My point is it's not rocket science just good mechanics in The trim . With this angle achieved it relieved joint pressure right up the Limb . Resulting in stifle soundness. Hopefully!

22/06/2017

Quarter crack floated cleaned and repaired . Fitted with heart bar and equipak to distribute the load elsewhere .

26/02/2016

Some much needed heel support.

19/02/2016

Some sexy high heels for a low heeled horse that tended to want to touch down behind last prep. With a positive palmar angle in mind with correct trimming , elevation , support and increased breakover this preparation , so far so good. No sore bumpers.

15/02/2016

I felt my heart drop a little when I first saw this poor guy. Proper management by qualified Farriers is so important. This case was brought to me this past week with Acute Laminitis due to poor management and backyard trimming skills. This is unacceptable !!
