πŸβ„οΈ Rat Bait and Poison in Pets β„οΈπŸ

As the cooler months arrive, rodents often begin seeking warmth and shelter around homes, sheds, and garages. Unfortunately, this also means rat and mouse baits become more commonly used - and these products can pose a serious risk to our pets.

Rat poison is highly toxic to dogs and cats, even in very small amounts. Pets may be exposed by directly eating bait or by catching a rodent that has consumed poison.

⚠️ Signs of poisoning can vary depending on the type of bait used and may include: Lethargy and weakness Bleeding and bruising Vomiting and diarrhoea Difficulty breathing Tremors and seizures Pale gum or collapse

Some symptoms may not appear straight away, which is why prompt veterinary attention is so important if exposure is suspected.

To keep your pets safe:
βœ… Store all rodent products securely out of reach
βœ… Avoid placing bait/poison in areas pets can reach
βœ… Supervise pets outdoors where possible
βœ… Seek veterinary advice immediately if you think your pet may have come into contact with bait or a poisoned rodent

Early treatment can make a significant difference in outcomes. If your concerned your pet may have been exposed to rat poison, please contact us on (03) 9279 2844 for advice.

β„οΈπŸΎ Winter Tips for Pets πŸΎβ„οΈ

As the colder weather settles in, it’s important to help keep our furry friends warm, healthy, and comfortable throughout winter. Here are a few simple tips to help your pets stay happy during the chilly season:

🐢 Keep them warm: Provide warm bedding away from cold floors and draughts. Some pets, especially senior pets, short-haired breeds, and small animals, may benefit from a cosy jumper or extra blankets.

🐱 Watch outdoor time: Cold mornings and wet weather can be uncomfortable for pets. Limit time outside during very cold days and always make sure they have access to warm shelter and fresh water.

🐾 Dry paws after walks: Wet paws can become irritated from cold surfaces and mud. Gently dry your pet’s paws after walks and check for any redness or cracking.

πŸ₯£ Maintain a healthy diet: Some pets may need a little extra food during winter to maintain body heat, while others may become less active. Keeping an eye on their weight and exercise routine is important.

πŸ’§Don’t forget hydration: Pets still need plenty of fresh water during winter, even if they may seem less thirsty.

🩺 Monitor arthritis and older pets: Cold weather can make arthritis and joint pain worse. If your pet seems stiff, slower to move, or uncomfortable, it may be time for a check-up.

🐰 Small pets need extra care too: Rabbits and guinea pigs should be kept dry and protected from cold winds and damp conditions during winter.

A little extra care during winter can go a long way in keeping your pets safe and comfortable all season long. ❀️

🐾 Pyometra in Female Pets 🐾

Pyometra is a serious uterine infection that can occur in unsprayed (entire) female dogs and cats. It typically develops due to hormonal changes following a heat cycle and can progress quickly if not treated.

What is Pyometra? Pyometra is an infection of the uterus where pus builds up internally. It is a condition that requires prompt veterinary attention and is considered a medical emergency.

🩺 Signs to look out for: Symptoms can vary, but may include: Lethargy or reduced energy Loss of appetite Increased thirst or urination. Vomiting or discomfort A swollen abdomen Vaginal discharge (not always present).

In some cases, the cervix remains closed, meaning no discharge is seen, which can make the condition harder to detect.

βœ… Treatment: Treatment usually involves surgical removal of the infected uterus and ovaries (desexing procedure), along with supportive care such ad fluids and antibiotics. Early intervention greatly improves outcomes.

🐾 Prevention: Desexing is the most effective way to prevent pyometra and is strongly recommended. It also provides additional long-term health and behavioural benefits.

If you have any concerns about your pet's health or are unsure about desexing, please contact our team at VetCare Woodlea for advice.

Changes in your cat's environment - like travel, vet visits. new pets, or even rearranging furniture - can sometimes lead to stress-related behaviours.

Flyway Spray is a simple, effective way to help reduce stress and promote a sense of comfort for your feline friend. It works by mimicking natural calming pheromones that cats release when they feel safe in their environment.

How can it help?
βœ” Reduces stress during travel (carriers & car rides)
βœ” Helps minimise urine spraying
βœ” Supports calm behaviours in new unfamiliar environments
βœ” Assists with multi-cat household tension

How to use Flyway Spray: Spray onto bedding, carriers, or areas your cats spends time (NOT directly on your cat) Apply 15 minutes before introducing your cat to the area or carrier Reapply as needed for ongoing support

πŸΎπŸ’” Paw Pad Injuries in Pets πŸ’”πŸΎ

Paw pads are tough, but they are not indestructible. Our pet rely on them every day to walk, run, and explore their world - so when they're injured, it can be quite uncomfortable.

🐾 Common causes of paw pad injuries include: Hot surfaces (especially in warmer weather/months) Rough terrain like gravel or sharp objects Burns or abrasions Cuts from glass or debris Allergies or excessive licking

🩺 Signs to look out for: Limping or favouring a paw Licking or chewing at the feet Redness, swelling, or bleeding Reluctance to walk or go outside

βœ… How you can help: Check your pet's paws regularly Avoid walking during the hottest parts of the day Keep nails trimmed and fur between pads neat Use pet-safe paw balms if recommended Seek veterinary care if you notice any wounds or ongoing discomfort

Even small injuries can become painful or infected if left untreated. if you're ever unsure, it's always best to have your pet checked by a vet.
