Same fluff, different generations- Meet Moon & Yumi! 🥹

Our handsome big boy Moon is one of our lovely regulars, and today we welcomed little Yumi for her very first grooming visit…
Just a tiny size difference between these two! 😂

While Moon is a seasoned pro when it comes to his grooming appointments, little Yumi is only just beginning her lifelong grooming journey!

Samoyeds are known for their gorgeous, thick double coats, but all that fluff comes with some serious maintenance!

Regular professional grooming is essential to remove dead undercoat, prevent compacted fur and keep their coats healthy. With Melbourne’s warmer weather creeping in, it’s especially important to stay on top of all that extra fluff!

Their double coats play an important role in natural temperature regulation, which is why proper coat maintenance is so important.

Start them young, keep them consistent, and embrace the fluff!

We can’t wait to watch little Yumi grow into her big Samoyed boots… although she’s got a bit of catching up to do with Moon! 🥰

Coming out of winter, we’re seeing a LOT of coats like this in the salon.

For some dogs, it’s been a little longer between professional grooms over the cooler months. Add in longer winter coats, jackets, moisture and brushing that might not quite be reaching the skin - and matting can build up underneath without being particularly obvious from the outside.

And that’s okay. We’re not here to make anyone feel bad about it. We’d much rather get the coat sorted, get your dog comfortable and start fresh.

But we also want owners to understand why a heavily matted groom costs more than their usual appointment.

Our standard grooming prices are based on a regularly maintained coat. When matting becomes tight or compacted, there’s an entire extra step added to the groom.

Instead of our usual bath → dry → clip & style, a matted dog often needs to be:

✂️ Pre-clipped before the bath to safely remove the bulk of the matting
🛁 Bathed and thoroughly dried
✂️ Clipped all over again to properly finish the groom

Essentially, we’re clipping the dog twice in one appointment.

We also need to work much more slowly around tight matting because it can pull on the skin underneath.

Extra time, care and breaks help us reduce the risk of irritation, clipper burn or accidentally catching skin that has been pulled up into the matting.

Pre-clipping a dirty, compacted coat is also incredibly hard on professional grooming equipment and can quickly blunt our blades, another hidden cost of these appointments.

That’s what our matting fees cover: the additional time, work and care required to get your dog comfortable again safely.

With the weather warming up and Christmas appointments already creeping closer, now is the perfect time to get those winter coats sorted.

If it’s been a while since your dog’s last groom, don’t stress. Book them in, we’ll assess the coat and go from there.

Fresh start, comfortable dog, and a much easier coat to maintain heading into summer. 🐶

We shared the screaming, crying, slightly unhinged moment we found out we’d won… but these photos felt deserving of their own little spot on the feed!

Running a family business is definitely not always the highlight reel.

Carla and I argue. 😂 A LOT.

We disagree on things, we drive each other crazy, we talk about work when we absolutely promised we weren’t going to talk about work, and there have been plenty of moments over the years where we’ve wondered what the hell we’re doing.

Owning a business can be stressful, exhausting and all-consuming. There’s always something that needs fixing, changing, improving or figuring out.

But at the end of the day… this is exactly what we wanted.

We wanted to build something of our own.

We wanted more than going to work, doing the 9–5 and coming home. We wanted to create something we cared about, make our own decisions (even if we argue about those decisions 😂), take some risks and see what we could build together.

And somewhere along the way, our little idea became Big Paws Little Paws.

A real business. A team of people we care about. Hundreds of dogs and families who trust us. A community around us. And somehow… an Outstanding Pet Care award sitting in our salon. 🥹

So while winning was bloody exciting, I think what meant the most was having one of those rare moments where you stop looking at everything that still needs to be done and actually look back at how far you’ve come.

It’s messy. It’s hard. We definitely still argue.

But we wouldn’t trade building this together for the 9–5 we decided wasn’t for us.

And that’s probably what this award will always mean to us.

We’re still a little bit in shock. 🥹🏆

Last night, Big Paws Little Paws was announced as the 2026 Winner for Outstanding Pet Care in Melbourne’s West at the Local Business Awards

Standing there alongside 11 incredible finalists, we genuinely didn’t expect to hear our name called. And judging by this video… we definitely weren’t prepared for it.

BPLP started as our little family business, built around one very simple thing - genuinely loving and caring for the dogs entrusted to us. To have that recognised in this way feels incredibly special.

We’re proud. We’re grateful. And we’re honestly just so touched that what we’ve built together has been recognised. We did it Mum 🩵

To our beautiful team, who care for these dogs like they’re their own - this belongs to you too. And to every family who trusts us with their dog, recommends us, supports us and has been part of BPLP along the way: thank you.

We really do have the best job in the world. 🐾
