Sly Boots, Saturday 30th May, Caulfield, Race 6:

We sent this gelding to Melbourne because this race simply doesn’t exist in New South Wales. He either had to carry 61kg in a Benchmark 78 or compete in open company, and suitable races over 2000 metres and beyond are generally hard to come by.
 
He is third up here and backs up off an excellent run where he was caught wide throughout. He has only met a Heavy track twice and one of those performances was arguably his best, where he finished within a length of Royal Supremacy at level weights. Royal Supremacy then went on to win the Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap two starts later before running fifth in a Caulfield Cup.
 
If Sly Boots handles the back up, and the signs at home suggest he will, I think this presents a lovely opportunity for him to return to the Winner’s Circle.

Vauban, Saturday 23rd May, Doomben, Race 8:

On my walk to work this morning, someone asked me how Vauban would handle the predicted Heavy surface and, without even thinking, I immediately replied, “He’ll swim.”
 
This horse has been to the Cheltenham Festival twice and raced successfully in France and Ireland, so naturally I assumed a wet track would be right up his alley. But when I sat down to write this piece and wanted to add a bit more context around it, I was shocked to discover he has actually only raced on a Heavy track once in his illustrious career. That was four and a half years ago in a three year old maiden hurdle at Punchestown where he started odds on favourite and was beaten by half a length.
 
Hopefully the person in question isn’t a betting man, but what I would say is that Heavy over there is very different to Heavy over here and his Soft track form is exceptional.
 
Since relocating to Australia, his first up form has been impeccable and in Europe horses tend to stay in work for long periods, but with their runs spaced much further apart. We took that philosophy into consideration when planning this preparation, with a slight Australian twist, and he had a week on the water walker before returning to prepare for Queensland.
 
Half Yours and Pride Of Jenni may have the quality, but no horse in Australia is tougher or more well travelled than Vauban and with a European style preparation under his belt, they’re on his turf and are going to need to bring their A game.

Surfin’ Bird, Saturday 16th May, Scone, Race 9:

I’m looking forward to this weekend because I always find it’s a very successful one for us across both states. Although Surfin’ Bird is yet to win in Stakes company, she proved that she is well and truly up to it two weeks ago when just getting her head down a stride past the post. She races the girls once again, the extra 100 metres will suit and the handicap conditions mean that she’s much more suitably weighted than she was last time.
 
She’s such a lightly raced mare that it’s hard to tell, but she seems to race very well when fresh. I’ve heard nothing but positive comments from her foreman and riders since her first up run though, so I’m happy to overlook any concerns there. This has been a long range plan for her and I think the puzzle pieces are coming together nicely. I think she’ll be hard to beat and hopefully secure her position amongst the Queensland Carnival team.
