Fabulous article…
Yep tissue, muscle and fascia don’t lie, they tell a story of past injuries and compensation patterns…
Believe in your horse and what they are doing their best to tell you… 🐴❤️❤️❤️🐴

Galloping, Bucking, Not Broken: The Greatest Lie Horses Ever Told 🐎💥

You step into the paddock, coffee in hand, expecting a peaceful morning and a whiff of horse breath that says “all is well.” ☕✨

Instead, your horse is on the wrong side of the fence, looking smug and oddly unscathed—or worse, still tangled in wire. You cut them free, patch up a scratch or two (or marvel at the miraculous absence of any), and thank the gods of lucky escapes.

Crisis averted.

Or is it? 😬

Here’s the problem: the real damage doesn’t always bleed.

Over the years, I’ve met a string of horses who’ve all survived this advanced-level self-sabotage. They’ve jumped a gate (well… tried), crashed through a fence, slipped on a slope, flipped, twisted, crushed or compressed themselves in ways that would make a chiropractor cry and a vet sigh while reaching for the X-ray machine (which, by the way, won’t show the damage either). 🏅💀

The horse recovers. No visible limp. They run. They buck. They play.

You think:
“They’re fine! Look at them go!”
But they’re not fine. Not even a little bit.

Enter: The Invisible Injury 🕵️‍♀️

What you can’t see—and what many professionals miss—is the slow-burn catastrophe hidden deep in the horse's body.

Ribcage. Pelvis. Sternum. Neck. Stifle.
The kind of stuff that doesn’t light up on X-rays or respond to your carrot-stick-wiggly-wand of trust. 🥕🌀

It’s the kind of discomfort that turns “walk, trot, canter” into “grimace, flinch, explode.”

And here’s the kicker: the horse doesn’t limp. It compensates.

Because horses, unlike people, don’t throw dramatic tantrums and demand cortisone shots. They quietly adjust. They twist, tighten, avoid, or overuse other parts of their body to keep going.

They are the masters of stoicism.....until you put a halter on.
You ask for a transition, a bend, a float trip, or—God forbid—a trot circle. And suddenly—

You get emotion.
You get resistance.
You get confusion, agitation, blow-ups, shut-downs—
Every spicy ingredient in a full-blown training meltdown stew. 🍲🔥
The Spiral Begins 🌀

The owner thinks: “I’m doing something wrong.”
The trainer thinks: “We need more groundwork.”
The horse thinks: “Kill me.” ☠️
Eventually, the owner moves on—new trainer, new method, new online course promising the horse will “choose joy and connection.”

But the problems persist.
Cue spiralling shame, rejection of all prior knowledge, and a desperate descent into rabbit holes of essential oils, a connection-based enlightenment facilitator, and equine shadow work. 🧘‍♀️🌿🔮

When in fact, what they really needed was a bloody good vet and bodyworker, and someone to say:

“Hey, maybe your horse’s inability to pick up the left lead can’t be fixed with trust exercises and lavender oil.”

The Warning Signs We Miss 🚩

Here are the red flags waving harder than a liberty trainer at sunset:

The horse becomes emotional, reactive, or weirdly robotic.
What should be simple feels charged, unpredictable, and unnervingly fragile.
Training progress flatlines, no matter how much effort you throw at it.
The horse starts avoiding halters, floats, mounting blocks—or life in general.
The problem isn’t always psychological.

Sometimes, it’s a bloody rib.
Or a pelvis rotated like a cheap IKEA table leg. 🪑

But we don’t look there—because the horse looks fine.
It bucks in the paddock! It gallops!
It must be okay!

Nope. That’s not health.
That’s compensation.
It’s adaptation with the odd short step.

Or worse—when they can’t limp because everything’s uncomfortable.
That’s when it gets really insidious.

What Happens Next is Predictable… and Sad 😢

These horses often get labelled as:

Difficult
Shut down
Disrespectful
“Needing more wet saddle blankets”
Or… “Needing a softer approach”
Or… “Not aligned with your energy” 🙃
No one considers the simple truth:

It hurts to do what we’re asking.
Not in a “don’t feel like it” way.
In a “my sternum’s fused to my shoulder blade and I can’t rotate left without seeing stars” way. 🌟

They suffer in silence while we rotate through training ideologies like a midlife crisis through motorcycles—all because we never asked the most obvious question:

“Has this horse ever had an accident?”

Because if they have—if they’ve failed to clear a gate, slipped, fallen, crushed, or tangled in wire—it may have changed everything. Not just the body, but the brain.

Pain messes with movement.
It makes easy things hard.
It turns willing horses into wary ones.
And it ruins good humans who start to believe they’re not good enough.

What You Can Do Instead of Losing Your Mind 🧠➡️🧘‍♂️

Take my good friend Tami Elkayam’s advice:
If something happens, write it down in a diary. ✍️

Even if they seem fine.

Then, if things start getting weird months or years later, don’t reach for your third liberty course or $800 worth of chamomile pellets. 💸🌼

Consider that maybe—just maybe—your horse isn’t emotionally broken, disrespectful, or traumatised by a training method.

Maybe those fractured ribs are hurting when you do up the girth.

Before You Burn It All Down… 🔥🚫

Before you give up, throw out your halters, block your last five coaches on Instagram, or trade your saddle for an oracle deck… pause.

Reflect.

Is it possible your horse is trying—but simply can’t?
Could it be that what they’re resisting isn’t you—but a physical reality no amount of groundwork or paddock bonding can fix?
Is it time to stop blaming yourself, your horse, and everyone you’ve ever learned from—and instead… dig deeper?
Because sometimes, the source of your training failures, your emotional spirals, and your eroded confidence…
..was a bloody gate.
That your horse didn’t clear.
That day. 🐴💔

If this switched on a lightbulb 💡, hit share. Pass it on.

Disclaimer: This is satire. Humour helps people read long posts they’d usually scroll past—so they don’t miss something that might actually help them or their horse.

Feel like tone-policing? Fabulous. Write your own post. That’s where your opinion belongs.

Every view point and every opinion creates a ripple in the energy space…
Be mindful of what you say and why you say it…
Everything imprints into the energetic field and has an ongoing ripple effect through time and space….

So what does this mean?

If you say to yourself, or out loud to your horse, or coach, my horse can’t do that he/she isn’t good enough, I am not good enough, it’s to hard for him/her, I’m to old to do that,
My horse doesn’t like that it scares him/her.. etc:
Then that thought/words used is sent out into the energetic field to ripple back to you with more of the same….

Always be mindful of what you say and think…

Speak, think and see in your minds eye what you wish to achieve, while sending love towards your horse, which will ripple into the energetic field bringing it back to you…

Try to remember, what you put out there will always come back to you…
I know it’s hard!!! but the more times you catch yourself and change negative thoughts and words into positive ones, the easier it becomes….
We really do create our own reality….

Believe… Achieve….Succeed….

BICEPS FEMORIS

This amazing muscle extends the hip & stifle joint, the caudal ( towards the feet ) Division flexes the stifle, it’s one of the few muscles that can both flex and extend the same joint.
It abducts the hindlimb, and extents the hock joint, this muscle has attachments to the spinous ( in the middle ) and transverse processes ( on the side ) of the last three sacral vertebrae, the sacro - sciatic ligament and the tail fascia.
The Biceps Femoris has a major roll in keeping the hind leg and hind quarters functioning well…

In performance horses the biceps femoris is generally under a lot of stain, and can become very tight…

Symptoms of biceps femoris dysfunction and pain:
Swelling and weakness in the back of the thigh, which can be confused with sciatica with restriction to the sacro - sciatica ligament.
Lameness
Scuffing with the hind toe
Stiffness behind with a shortened stride due to an inability to flex the hip and hock.
Loss of range of motion in lateral work.
Uneven gait.
Resistance to moving forward or showing discomfort when moving forward.

If your horse is showing any of the above issues,
Best to have them checked out by a good therapist that can help release the biceps femoris, balance the pelvis and succum, release and activate the gluteal, basically balance the body again, as this is imperative before beginning strengthening work…

Correct training and movement is essential to helping the horse back to good balance and freedom of motion…

Exercises
To help after releasing tension, as long as no tears or excessive straining of the tissue.

In hand or under saddle:
Walking for 10 minutes
Rest, in halt, square if possible for 1 minute.
Walk again 10 minutes, adding in 4 raises poles with a full step in between, changing rein.
Rest in halt 1 minute.
Back up 5 steps with a lowered head, walk forward for 5 minutes.
Repeat twice more always in a straight line.
Repeat poles for another 10 minutes.
Gradually adding in trotting down the long side/walk short side x 4
Same with canter/trot x 4
If your horse is up to it…
If they start to feel uncomfortable in their gait rest and finish for the day….

Hill work,
Water walking,
Pole exercises,
Small jumping grids,
Two track work,
Are great for strengthening the Biceps Femoris when the muscle is functioning well..

Happy riding and connecting with your horse… 🐴❤️

From the beginning of time love and touch has always been a healing way…
“You can’t beat the power of love”
I love what I do
I love healing horses
I love training horses
I love rehabbing horses
I love connecting with horses
There is something so magical about feeling, seeing and understanding horses…
I love letting horses know they are seen and heard…

I get asked about all the different machines available to help a therapist with releasing body issues with in the horses, and would I use them….

I mainly just use my hands -and I will always have a crystal or 2 on me😃❤️awesome healing and calming energy…
Use Feel, my eyes, an open mind, and dedication to my work with the healing of the horse.
I have used a massage gun on my horses and myself, I have a massage chair, I love it!!!
They don’t always hit all the right spots, specially the compensation spots,
I will still go over the area with my hands to smooth out, check for heat/cold spots, tears, scar tissue, inflammation , over or under developed areas, ect:
Before to gage the time and pressure to use on different areas, after to smooth out and check how the area/muscle is responding. 👍

Why I prefer my hands 🙌
There is something amazingly special about the touch from one living being to another, a connection that is instant and integral to the healing process…
Different tools and machines are definitely a great help to the horse…
But I believe more in the power of the human touch with feel, connection, presences and healing energy given to another living being…

I love water therapy, great for soothing & supporting the muscles, take your horse for a walk/swim in the dam( with good footing)or beach.
I love hill work great for building and working the hindend powerhouse muscle,
Take you horse for a good walk up a hill, in hand or under saddle…
I love pole work too…
So many ways you can help strengthen your horses body with simple training, while spending quality time hanging out with them, this is the extra love they need to shine and heal…
🐴❤️
Happy riding…
Believe
Achieve
succeed…. 🙌

02/02/2025

So why is it important to have regular bodywork done on your horse?
So they can catch a dysfunctional muscle before it becomes chronic and cause compensation in other areas of the body…

This muscle is the:
Serratus Ventral Thoroacis and the Serratus Ventral Cervices.
When the foreleg is stationary/weight bearing it supports the trunk, when the horse takes a step this muscle pulls the upper part of the scapula down and back, rotating the shoulder joint up and forward.
The crevices part of the muscle pulls the upper portion of the scapula forward and up, helping to rotate the shoulder joint down…..
The Serratus ventral muscle is an integral part of the Thoracic sling, it also helps with raising the neck, and Thorax, aiding inspiration of the breathing, this muscle is the strongest muscle of attachment of the forelimbs….

Problems arising from a dysfunction of the SVT
The horse will show signs of:
*Moves freely until the girth is tightened.
*Shortened forelimbs stride
*Reduced range of motion of the neck
* Affected forelimbs stance
* Girthiness ( thoracic portion)
* Wither/ Shoulder sensitivity

This is an affected/stress area for horses that run, jump, and do a lot of collected work.
The stress/compensation will develop into the back of the forelegs….

Exercises to strengthen the Thoracic sling - which the SVT is one of the major muscles in.
Best to release tension from the muscles before starting the exercises.
* Raised cavaletti work - raised cavaletti”s encourage the horse to lift their legs and stretch their head down and out ( if you are riding ensure you allow enough rein for freedom of the horses head )
* Pole work is great for improving the thoracic sling muscles.
* Hill work
* Backing up in a straight line with a lowered head
* Lateral work with lots of rest and straight work in between.
All of these exercises can be done in hand and under saddle, best to incorporate both, allow the horse to understand and master the exercises in hand first with out the weight of the rider, it also allows you the ability to see exactly how the horse is moving through the body,
with good slow control and correction on the ground, you will find the horse softer through the exercise under saddle….

Happy riding & Learning together… 🐴❤️

26/01/2025

The “Transversus Abdominis”
It’s like a girdle for the lower abdominals and helps stabilise the lower back (Lumbar spine)
It runs up and down the flank area, a deep abdominal muscle protecting, supporting and holding the vital organs in place,
It’s a main stabiliser of the core, when the TVA is strong and working properly it helps maintain proper “Spine Support”
decrease back pain,
improve pelvic floor function and help with posture,
TVA helps stabilise between the hips,
ribs and pelvis,
its main role is to stabilise the trunk and maintain internal abdominal pressure, also aiding breathing, defecation, create flexion, lift and lateral flexion of the thoracic lumbar region of the spine..

Symptoms of a weak Transversus Abdominis -
Lower back pain
Hip pain, pelvic pain
SI joint dysfunction
Incontinence, constipation
Prolapse,
Lower back fatigue after prolonged standing or walking.
Under saddle/ or moving around the paddock
- dropping out behind, skipping or scuffling hind legs, changing canter leads,
disunited,
knocking rails with hind legs. Not tracking up,
struggling to maintain straightness, or correct bend.

If there is a build up of tension, and knotted tissues this will restrict motion and cause pain, while training, preventing the horse developing soft floating movements,
The horse will continue to find ways to compensate through other muscles and parts of the body, to preform the required movement.
Generally the knot will require manipulation to break it down and disperse,
When this malfunctioning bit of tissue is restored to its normal function, the pain ceases and they gain full range of motion again…👍

How to strengthen a “Transversus Abdominis”
*Long and low work, with engagement of the hind end, this helps the horse to work with an upward swinging back.
*Use of poles and appropriate gymnastic jumping exercise ( grids ) this encourages the horse to bascule and use his back. Under saddle or free jumping.
Stretching exercises
* carrot low between front legs
* carrot low to the side, always allow the horse full freedom of their head, and the extent of the stretch they are capable of at each stage for all Carrot stretches.
* back lift scratch reflex,
2-3 per session with a good minute rest between.
* backing up with a lowered head and straight, excellent for strengthening the flexor chain of muscles. Back up for 2 steps, rest 20/30 secs repeat 3 times, - working up to 10 steps back x 3, over 2 - 3 weeks.

For theses exercises to be fully effective, the tension and knots are best to be removed first…

Happy riding, training and hanging out with your equine buddy… 🐴❤️

While I was doing a bodybalance class yesterday,
The instructor had us moving into a rather challenging one leg star balance move…
Her amazing quote was, you may stumble and you may fall, that’s ok, we rebalance and start again, but “oh my dear what if you fly!!!”
This amazing quote can be applied to everything we do in life, especially with our horses…
Let go of your fear, trust in yourself and fly high,
you may just be pleasantly surprised…
Trust in your beautiful equine partner and in yourself and let the magic happen…
