Meet Wilma. 🧶

She’s a Barnevelder with zero concept of personal space and a nightly ritual that cannot be negotiated. While the rest of the flock sensibly wanders into the coop when the sun goes down, Wilma has decided that walking is strictly for peasants.

Every single evening at bedtime, she treats my shoulders like her personal Uber, hitching a ride right to the coop door like a feathered backpack. She’s funny, deeply dramatic, and fully convinced she’s the main character of this homestead.

If you need a Barnevelder, expect dark brown eggs and a bird who manages her own VIP transport.

🐔 A New Chapter for the Girls! 🐔

Last weekend, our family grew by five very special new members! We opened our hearts and home to five rescued battery farm hens, and we couldn't be more thrilled to give them the retirement they truly deserve.

It’s heartbreaking to think of what these sweet girls endured before, seeing open sky, soft grass, and fresh air for the very first time. Watching them take their first tentative steps outside, scratch in the dirt, and figure out what it means to actually be a chicken has been nothing short of magical.

If you’ve ever considered adopting or rescuing ex-battery hens, I cannot recommend it enough.

Seeing them transform from timid and weary into curious, feather-fluffed explorers is one of the most rewarding things ever.

Say hello to the newest ladies of the homestead!

It’s the most exciting (and nerve-wracking) time of the month... IT’S LOCKDOWN DAY! 🐣🔐

For those who don’t speak "chicken," today is Day 18 of our 21-day incubation cycle, which means things are getting incredibly real! The automatic turners are officially off, the eggs are laid flat so the babies can wriggle into hatching position, and the humidity is cranked way up to help soften the shells. 💧🥚

Now comes the absolute hardest part of the entire process: The Golden Rule of Lockdown. 🛑

The incubator lid is officially SEALED. No matter what happens, and no matter how desperately we want to peek, we absolutely cannot open the lid. If we do, we lose all that precious humidity the chicks need to safely break out.

Now, we wait. I'll basically be glued to the incubator window for the next 72 hours, watching for that very first "pip" (crack) in the shells!

Send us all the good hatching vibes! We should have some new fluffy additions to the flock in just a few days! 🐥✨

🐣 Hi 👋🏼 everyone 🐣

🤍 Time for a proper introduction - the Folklore Coop was born in 2022 🤍

🪺 I’m Cynthia, who shares time working as a caseload midwife, being a mum to my children, and my farm animals🪺

I learned to enjoy Taylor Swift while tagging along with my daughter’s fan antics with her favourite singer, and this is where the name “Folkore Coop” comes from (those who know, know). We still have to add a whole lot of plants, and leaves to the roof though. Hopefully, I can get some real vines growing on there..

Growing up on my aunty’s farm, I spent countless hours there and have always dreamed of becoming a vet. While the dream didn’t come true, it’s remained cherished in my heart.

My kids love animals too and they’re the reason I became “the crazy chicken lady”. From our humble beginnings with just four tiny chicks, we discovered that chicken math is a thing.

The crazy chicken lady golden rule is also a thing: I won’t ever admit how many chickens I have. Who is counting? I’m not, you are!

We are settled in the Karana Downs area and love the beautiful greenery around us. Currently, we have an assortment of chicken and quails breeds and a couple of miniature goats that are very spoiled and always wondering why in this life their mummy, who bottle-fed them from just month-old, does NOT live outside with them.

My hobby farm has become a side hustle that I do wholeheartedly. It’s a labour of love fuelled by my passion for reading, studying and learning. I’ve been particularly enjoying genetics recently.

Earlier his year I took one of my chickens to a show and she won second prize 🏆. It’s a great learning experience and also loads of fun.

My favourite thing is spending time outdoors pampering and caring for them. So grab a drink, sit back and enjoy watching our learning experiences, successes and failures with a touch of behind-the-scenes. 🍸 🛋️ 🍷 🥂 🐓 🪺

🥚 Next Up: The Quail Crew for 2026! 🥚

The chickens aren’t the only ones getting their breeding pens sorted at Antunes Homestead—our quail breeding program is locked in and ready to go for the 2026 season!

Just like our poultry, our focus here is on raising strong, healthy, and high-quality birds. We are thrilled to announce this season's official quail lineup:

👑 King Quail (The tiny, colorful favorites!)
🇯🇵 Japanese Coturnix (The reliable, fantastic all-rounders)
🇺🇸 California Quail (Stunning birds with that iconic topknot plume)
🌾 Bobwhite Quail (Full of personality and classic charm)

From the tiny button-sized Kings to the beautifully patterned Californias, we’ve got a fantastic mix of varieties this year. Breeding pens are being prepped, and we can't wait to see these little eggs hitting the incubator soon.

🐣 Breeding Plan 2026: The Team is Assembling! 🐣

Exciting news from Antunes Homestead! The 2026 breeding season is officially underway, and we are starting to pen up some of our breeding teams this week.

Our number one goal this season is simple: breeding healthy, vigorous, and robust chicks that will thrive.
