📌 Important Update from Big Dog Grooming

At Big Dog Grooming, our mission has always been to provide thoughtful, professional grooming services tailored specifically for large breed dogs. As we continue to grow and expand into new areas 🚀, we’re investing our time behind the scenes into developing a "NEW PRODUCT"🐾 that will allow us to better support the dogs and families we serve.

As a result, our availability is currently very limited ⏳, and we’re focusing on our existing regular and puppy school clients.

🔸 If you're already booked with us — thank you 🙏 Your continued support means the world.
🔸 At this stage, we will not be accepting new one-off or casual grooming bookings.

This decision reflects our commitment to consistent, Fear Free care 💙 — and to the future we’re building.

We appreciate your understanding as we enter this exciting new chapter.

Big things are on the way, and we can't wait to share them with you🐶✨

Warmly,
Rachael & the Big Dog Grooming Team

🐾❤️ As a passionate dog lover and dog groomer...there is nothing better than when my beautiful fur-friends are just as excited to see me as I am them. This video was taken by a lovely client who has been bringing her long haired GS to Big Dog Grooming HQ since we opened our doors!!!

A very important reminder...

A very important reminder...

***I am a 21st century dog.***
-I'm a Malinois.
Overskilled among dogs, I excel in all disciplines and I'm always ready to work: I NEED to work.
But nowadays I get asked to chill on the couch all day everyday.

-I am an Akita Inu.
My ancestors were selected for fighting bears.
Today I get asked to be tolerant and I get scolded for my reactivity when another approaches me.

-I am a Beagle.
When I chase my prey, I raise my voice so the hunters could follow.
Today they put an electric collar on me to shut up, and you make me come back to you - no running - with a snap of your fingers.

-I am a Yorkshire Terrier.
I was a terrifying rat hunter in English mines.
Today they think I can't use my legs and they always hold me in their arms.

-I'm a Labrador Retriever.
My vision of happiness is a dive into a pond to bring back the duck he shot to my master.
Today you forget I'm a walking, running, swimming dog; as a result I'm fat, made to stay indoors, and to babysit.

-I am a Jack Russell.
I can take on a fox, a mean badger, and a rat bigger than me in his den.
Today I get scolded for my character and high energy, and forced to turn into a quiet living room dog.

-I am a Siberian Husky.
Experienced the great, wide open spaces of Northern Europe, where I could drag sleds for long distances at impressive speeds.
Today I only have the walls of the house or small garden as a horizon, and the holes I dig in the ground just to release energy and frustration, trying to stay sane.

-I am a border collie
I was made to work hours a day in partnershipwith my master, and I am an unmistakable artist of working with the herd.
Today they are mad at me because, for lack of sheep, I try to check bikes, cars, children in the house and everything in motion.

I am ...
I am a 21st century dog.

I'm pretty, I'm alert, I'm obedient, I stay in a bag...but I'm also an individual who, from centuries of training, needs to express my instincts, and I am *not* suited for the sedentary life you'd want me to lead.

Spending eight hours a day alone in the house or in the garden - with no work and no one to play or run with, seeing you for a short time in the evening when you get home, and only getting a small toilet walk will make me deeply unhappy.

I'll express it by barking all day, turning your yard into a minefield, doing my needs indoors, being unmanageable the rare times I'll find myself outside, and sometimes spending my days sunk, sad, lonely, and depressed, on my pillow.

You may think that I should be happy to be able to enjoy all this comfort while you go to work, but actually I’ll be exhausted and frustrated, because this is absolutely NOT what I'm meant to do, or what I need to be doing.
If you love me, if you've always dreamed of me, if my beautiful blue eyes or my athletic look make you want me, but you can't give me a real dog's life, a life that's really worth living according to my breed, and if you can't offer me the job that my genes are asking, DO NOT buy or adopt me!

If you like the way I look but aren't willing to accept my temperament, gifts, and traits derived from long genetic selection, and you think you can change them with only your good will, then DO NOT BUY OR ADOPT ME.

I’m a dog from the 21st century, yes, but deep inside me, the one who fought, the one who hunted, the one who pulled sleds, the one who guided and protected a herd still lives within.

So think **very** carefully before you choose your dog. And think about getting two, rather than one, so I won't be so very lonely waiting for you all day. Eight or ten hours is just a workday to you, but it's an eternity for me to be alone.

Training a BIG Dog – Just how important is it?

Setting out to train your new puppy or dog is something that most people do in some way. Whether its just toilet training inside, teaching how to sit, walking on a loose lead, coming when called or a myriad of other behaviours. The starting point of it all is clear communication, understanding (on both sides) and follow through.
For your puppy/dog, his size doesn’t really play a part in his picture of life, especially when little, as he has little concept of this, however, for the family, it can have quite severe consequences as a large breed puppy grows, develops and starts to understand his world, his place in his world, and his size.
Lets face it, there are many small dogs who rule the roost. These dogs usually exhibit behaviours like barking at little to nothing, don’t listen to their family, are generally unsettled, can’t walk calmly on a lead, jumping up on people, being reactive to other dogs - you get the picture. Because they are little, they can be largely ignored and left to carry on because the disruption to the family life can be managed.

Now replace this scenario with a large breed puppy. Image you have a 50kg puppy under 12 months old and he is displaying the same behaviours. Now you have a BIG problem. Not only is he very strong, he will learn to use his size and strength to get whatever he wants.
Initially he was doing behaviours that you thought were cute for a puppy so you let it go.
Then you realised that he was getting bigger and so were your problems with his behaviour.
Perhaps you looked on google or got advice to “just ignore him” and give him a treat when he settles. Lets use jumping on you in this example. If your puppy likes jumping up, he finds just doing this, even without any input from you, great fun, he will continue doing it even if you ignore him. Sometimes dogs find the act of doing something they like more rewarding than food, so it isn’t always the answer.
So you took the advice to just ignore him and now you have a 60kg mastiff jumping on you because he likes doing it.
As another example, if you walked into a room and found your toddler drawing with crayons on your wall. Would you (a) ignore him and let him continue and give him a bickie or lolly when he stops, or would you (b) go and take the crayon off him, take him away from the wall and perhaps depending on his age, try and explain why this is not acceptable.

When you ignore your dogs behaviour, you are pretty much giving him the green light to continue. Teaching your dog the meaning of the word No and being able to follow up and stop, block or give him an alternative behaviour is integral in your dog learning how to live with you and you both enjoying your life together,

So if you have a puppy, especially if he is going to grow into a BIG dog, get the right advice and training as soon as possible. It will make your life so much easier and enjoyable.

🐾 What a weekend at Big Dog HQ! 🐾

It’s been a full few days here at Big Dog Grooming and we wouldn’t have it any other way!

✨ We welcomed two lovely local dogs for their very first grooms — and they were absolute Super Stars! Calm, curious, and oh-so-clean by the time they left. We are very much looking forward to seeing them again soon.

🏡 Our favourite weekend guest, Archer, joined us for a stay-cation and once again completely stole our hearts. We were very reluctant to hand him back… 🥹

🎓 And a big round of applause for our First Steps Puppy School graduates! Four wonderful pups ventured out into the big wide world with our very final class, where we put it all into practice, with a visit to our local Bunnings. We are so proud of how far you have all come and how you embrace life with confidence, curiosity, and a strong foundation.

🐕‍🦺 Finally...in class this week, our Week 3 pups tackled brand new obstacles, with a strong focus on the power of luring — turning challenges into play and helping pups learn to problem-solve with joy.

All in all? Life at Big Dog HQ is busy, beautiful, and filled with smiles and wagging tails. 💛
