During spring, snails and slugs begin their march towards your garden and its produce.

Before using snail and slug bait, it’s important to consider the risks it can pose to your dogs.

Ingestion of the bait can be fatal and there is no antidote.

Symptoms include:
• Anxiety
• Elevated heart rate and breathing
• Drunken walking
• Severe muscle tremors
• Death

Ensure your dog is not left unsupervised with access to snail bait.

If you suspect they may have ingested some, immediately contact your veterinarian.

Do you know how to safely transport your dog when it’s on the back of a vehicle?

Unfortunately, dogs can be injured or killed while travelling on the back of a moving vehicle.

The law in Victoria requires that dogs on utes are restrained either via a tether or cage so that the dog cannot fall or jump off or be injured when the vehicle moves or stops suddenly.

When the outside temperature is at or above 28 degrees Celsius, a dog on the metal tray of a ute or trailer must have access to an area of insulating material protecting the dog from contact with the hot metal surface.

The best practice is for dogs to travel in the cabin of the vehicle and be kept either:
• on the backseat using an appropriate seatbelt or restraining device
• in the open cargo area of a vehicle behind a cargo barrier.
