Many members of our wonderful community have been asking how Buzz has been going on his travels.

After a slight delay, he is finally on his big trip around Oz, heading down to Tasmania in the past week. And, in proper Buzz form, he managed to find this little cutie alone on the beach! This baby seal was taken into the local vet and after talking to the National Parks Service (and a nice nap) was found to be healthy and placed back where he had come from.

Safe travels Buzz!

📣IMPORTANT SAFETY ANNOUNCEMENT: 1080 BAITING 📣

1080 baiting has commenced in parts of Kin Kin, Como, and Cootharaba. 1080, also known as sodium fluoroacetate, is a deadly pesticide used for controlling feral animals, and it has no antidote. Unfortunately the pesticide is also fatal to domestic pets who ingest the poison, ingest contaminated water, or who ingest parts of an animal that has succumbed to the bait.

If you live within 1.5kms of a property participating in the baiting program, you will receive an email with specific details, however animals can carry the bait great distances before succumbing, which means the bait can be carried to properties not participating in the bait program. If you see a 1080 sign, ensure you do not let your pets enter the area. 1080 typically appears as green or blue pellets, however when used in baiting, it may be placed in sausage or other pieces of meat in order to disguise it. Working dogs in the area should be kept contained, or wear a muzzle that prevents eating while baiting is ongoing.

Symptoms of 1080 poisoning can occur from 1-24 hours after ingestion and typically appear as vomiting, anxiety, disorientation, shaking, seizuring, coma, and eventually death. If you notice your pet has any of these symptoms, call us immediately or come into the clinic between 8am and 5pm Monday-Friday. For 24/7 and emergency care please contact the Sunshine Coast Small Animal Specialists on 5453 7555.

If you know that your pet has ingested the bait, seek veterinary attention immediately. 1080 poison has no antidote, and immediate response is required for the best chance of survival.

📣 IMPORTANT MICROCHIP UPDATE 📣

A while ago you may have heard that HomeSafe ID, one of Australia's largest microchip databases, has shut down, leaving thousands of animals across Australia with unregistered microchips. The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) has just announced that they have obtained the records of all animals previously registered with HomeSafe ID, and over the next few months these records will be applied to Central Animal Records at no cost to owners.

What does this mean for pet owners? If your pet was registered through HomeSafe ID, Central Animal Records (CAR) will be contacting you with updated registration details. Monitor your email inbox for updates to see when your registration is confirmed.

If you don't know who your pet's microchip is registered to, contact our team or pop into the clinic and we can sort it out for you 🐾

This beautiful Barn Owl was rescued by a local after he got his wings caught in a barbed wire fence 🦉

Although small, these Barn Owls are incredible predators that rely on their wings to help them navigate and catch prey. Thanks to the quick actions of his rescuer and some TLC from our wonderful vet Kerrie, he has been patched up and taken into care for rehabilitation and release.
