IS AN ANIMAL SPARED
Please stay safe and remember to check those pouches . THANK YOU FOR CARING 💕 I am an animal rescuer.

I have bought animal food with my last dime, I have patted a mangy head with a bare hand. I have hugged those that are vicious and afraid. I have fallen in love a thousand times, and I have cried into the fur of a lifeless body too many times to count. My work is never done, my home is never quiet, my wallet is always empty - but my heart is always full. ~ Unknown

Was horrified last night when we went out to do rescues. Had so many calls for car hits and broken legs. We went out three times for three different roos all hit by car! All died before we got to them.
The number of KILLER fences that have been put up recently is unreal. You have got to wonder why they chose to move out here!
We were in the middle of a wildlife haven! Now 39yrs later I barely see any wildlife apart from what I have in care, and that is just plain SAD!

All the new housing estates have gone into koala habitat that also supported other wildlife like: possums, gliders, cockatoo, galahs and others. Plus the ground dwellers Echidnas, Bandicoots, Roos and Wallaby. We are also loosing farming land...

Wake up people before it's too late

🦜💜 We are here for our avian wildlife patients.

With recent news about Avian Influenza (H5N1) being detected in Australia, we know many people are wondering what this means for injured and sick wild birds.

The good news is that UQVETS will continue to provide care for wildlife and avian patients. Caring for our native wildlife is an important part of what we do, and we're committed to ensuring birds in need still have access to compassionate veterinary care.

At this stage:
✅ There has been 1 confirmed case of Avian Influenza in Queensland.
✅ The current risk to people and pets in Queensland remains low.
✅ We are following advice from Biosecurity Queensland and the Australian Veterinary Association and have protocols in place to keep our patients, clients and team safe.

If you find an injured or unwell bird, please call the National Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888 in the first instance. If you still require assistance, please call us on 07 5460 1788 before bringing them in. This allows our team to gather information and ensure we can provide the safest and most appropriate care for every patient.

Our commitment to caring for wildlife hasn't changed, and with the support of our wonderful community, we'll continue to help our feathered friends when they need us most 🐦❤️

Thank you for looking out for our local wildlife and for trusting us with their care 🩺🪶

H5N1 bird flu is finally here 😢

It's highly contagious & spreads via mucous, fluids, p**p. Reporting is mandatory & it’ll start in coastal & wetland areas. We've had 1 case where the bird got sick here (the others have been migratory birds already sick when they got here).
❓ It’s been different in every country & our wildlife is unique, so we don’t know how it’ll progress here.

What it looks like:
🦆 Birds: snot bubbles/dripping, coughing, sneezing, laboured/mouth breathing, lethargic, fluffed & not moving much, can’t fly, swim/walk in circles, lots of head shaking (to flick away snot), head held at weird angles, side-to-side head swaying, nodding, swollen face, white skin around eyes/ceres, tremors, paralysis, unsteady walking.
🐈‍⬛‍ Cats: Respiratory symptoms: wheezing, laboured breathing, snot bubbles/dribbles, weeping eyes. Looks like cat flu. High infection rates overseas.
🐩 Dogs & other mammals: Neurological symptoms. Bad coordination, tremors, seizures, head held at strange angles, nodding, swaying, circling.
🙅‍♀️ Humans: flu symptoms. Fever, fatigue, sore throat, cough, headaches, body aches.

If you see any bird or mammal with these symptoms, generally behaving abnormally, 2+ sick/dead in the same place, mass deaths:
🛑 AVOID: DON’T GO NEAR IT, KEEP PETS AWAY! Even if you think you know what’s wrong with it or it looks like a baby. If it’s on the ground & doesn’t look normal, stay away.
📸 RECORD: Exact location, symptoms. Take photos/video.
📲 REPORT: Call the Emergency Animal Disease (EAD) Hotline 1800 675 888. They’ll send someone to rescue it.

‼️️ High-risk species: waterfowl, masked lapwings/plovers, curlews, sea birds, raptors, hunters/scavengers like cats, dogs, foxes, rats, mice, seals, sea lions, quolls, brushtail possums, Tasmanian devils.

Was brought in by a dog. Who knows how long he'd been alone, but he was pretty crispy...
This pic was taken a few days later after he was a little more hydrated.
