🌿 What's Growing in Your Chicken Garden?

Did you know you can grow snacks your chickens will absolutely love?

Some easy favourites include:
🥬 Silverbeet
🌿 Kale
🌱 Comfrey
🌻 Sunflowers
🍀 Clover
🌾 Chickweed

Growing your own chicken treats helps reduce waste, saves money and gives your flock extra enrichment.

Bonus tip:
Hang leafy greens from the roof of the run instead of placing them on the ground. It keeps them cleaner and encourages natural foraging behaviour.

What plants do your chickens race over to first?

🥚 New to Chicken Keeping? Avoid These 5 Common Mistakes

Getting your first heritage chickens is exciting... but it's easy to make a few beginner mistakes.

Here are five we see all the time:
🐓 Giving too many treats.
Treats are fun, but they should only make up a small part of your flock's diet. A quality layer feed should always come first.
💧 Underestimating water.
Fresh, clean water every day is essential—especially during warmer weather. Chickens can stop laying if they become dehydrated.
🏠 Not allowing enough coop space.
Crowded chickens become stressed, which can lead to pecking and other health issues.
🌿 Forgetting about predators.
Foxes, snakes, hawks, dogs... every area has different risks. Secure housing is one of the best investments you'll make.
📸 Buying chickens before everything is ready.
Have your coop, feeders, drinkers and fencing prepared before your birds arrive.

Starting well makes keeping chickens so much more enjoyable.

What's one thing you wish you'd known before getting chickens?

🐓 Is Your Hen Going Broody?

A broody hen can be a wonderful natural incubator, but it's important to recognise the signs.

You may notice:
🥚 She stays on the nest for most of the day.
🥚 She becomes protective of her nesting area.
🥚 Feather fluffing and defensive behaviour increase.
🥚 Egg production slows or stops.

Some heritage breeds are naturally more prone to broodiness than others, making them excellent mothers for naturally raising chicks.

Whether broodiness is a blessing or a challenge often depends on your flock goals!

Do you currently have a broody hen, or have you ever let one hatch chicks naturally? Share your experience below. 👇

🐓 Breed Spotlight: Cream Legbar

Cream Legbars are loved for one very special reason...
🥚 Blue eggs!

But that's only part of what makes them special.

They're also:
🌿 Excellent foragers
🐓 Active and intelligent
🥚 Consistent layers
📸 Easy to identify chicks thanks to their auto-sexing genetics

If you're looking for colourful egg baskets while supporting heritage breeds, Cream Legbars are a fantastic choice.

Do blue eggs ever get old?
We don't think so!

We have some day old chicks available for pick-up this Sunday, along with all the supplies required to successfully raise your babies.

🌿 Simple Enrichment Ideas Your Chickens Will Love

Happy chickens are busy chickens.

Here are a few enrichment ideas you can try this week:
🥬 Hang a cabbage or lettuce.
🌻 Scatter a handful of scratch grain through straw.
🪵 Add logs or branches for climbing.
🐓 Create a small dust bath using dry soil and sand.
📸 Move a few safe objects around occasionally to encourage exploration.

These little changes help reduce boredom and encourage natural behaviours.

What do your chickens enjoy playing with the most?
