Big hatcheries go for numbers. We go for health, temperament, and quality.

Every chick we send out has been handled gently, brooded with care, and given the best start.

Just over 1000 eggs to be cleaned and set in the incubator.

It seems like we will have a lot of chicks, but there is a process or elimination that happens.

In 10 days' time, i will candle these eggs and remove all the clear eggs (infertile) and all the eggs that have stopped developing, this will leave the remaining eggs to keep developing until day 18 at which point I will re-candle them to remove any dud eggs and transfer them to my hatcher.

Once hatched, chicks will be sexed and 50-60% will be identified as male, after which we then make known what girls we have available for you to raise.

This process also allows us to make fertile eggs available and also to know the health of our breeding stock.

Pre-order your spring chicks now (this lot of chicks will be available in 3 weeks time)

Heritage breeds lay slower—but better.

Stronger shells. Deeper yolks. And each egg tells a story that started generations ago.

Question: What surprised you most when you switched to heritage eggs?

🧑‍🌾 When I first started raising chickens, I had no idea what I was doing.

My chickens had different needs, personalities, and temperaments. It was confusing! But the Choose Your Chook PDF helped me avoid mistakes and brought more joy to my flock.

With all this heavy rain, coops are being flooded.🌊

Even the best prepared people can not combat mother nature when she unleashes the waters from the heavens.🌨

My poor Faverolle copped the brunt of yesterday's crazy weather, BUT wood shavings is a chicken keepers best friend when it comes to mopping up the mess.

Considering I have 30 odd chicken coop's I can't really complain.

The long range wether forecast is for continued wet weather right into December, so stock up on wood shavings just in case🙂

Also, keep an eye out for symptoms of coccidiosis, this is perfect conditions for it.
