Don't Go Astray Inc - Helping Animals In Need

Don't Go Astray Inc. help surrendered and stray animals in need. Don't Go Astray helps animals in need, giving them the second chance they deserve.

We assist with veterinary treatment, rehabilitation, fostering and re-homing of animals that just want to be loved. Our not-for-profit organisation was formed in June 2018, and within six months was honoured with the RSPCA Humane Award – a huge deal for newcomers such as ourselves. This encouragement has galvanised our passion and commitment and we became a registered not for profit February 2019.

Driven by a shared desire to make a positive impact, our team's mission is to make a difference in the lives of surrendered and stray animals. Each member of Don't Go Astray comes from the veterinary and animal rescue industry, pooling a broad range of complementary skills. Together, our aim is not just to care for animals, but to provide assistance for people unable to meet the financial cost of emergency veterinary care.

Sometimes being in the rescue industry is so tough!
The amount of emails, calls, private messages you receive to help animals in need can be heart wrenching because we just can't help them all and it kills our souls!

Everyone in rescue is a major empath, we feel for every situation, we don't judge any situation, we do what we can and go above and beyond where we can, to help the animals.

We do this around our full time jobs, studies, kids, our own animals and our own lives.

Sometimes we want to give up and quit, sometimes we need support because some cases can be very hard.

At the end of the day we do it all to change animals lives for the better and we are extremely proud of that.

We want to say a huge THANK YOU to all the volunteers, DGA's board and committee and all of YOU!

Joan Update – Happily Ever After!

Joan is absolutely thriving in her forever home — and guess what?!

She now has a baby brother named Otis, who’s also deaf! Joan is completely smitten with him and the two are already inseparable.

We’re always so happy to get heartwarming updates from our incredible adoptive families! 💕

I know so many of you shared her story and are interested in how she is going :). Thank you 🙏.

These two brothers are 7 months old and absolute legends.

They are friendly, confident and playful! They came into care from a rural part of WA and settled into foster care with no dramas whatsoever. They take everything in stride.

They have been in their foster home with two dogs and a resident cat whom they love! They have had multiple foster kittens in and out of the house and they are brilliant brothers to everyone.

The boys provide endless entertainment and cuddles. They love putting themselves to bed at night in their foster carers bed. During the day they are usually entertaining eachother with a game or wrestling the dogs or their foster siblings.

Peter & Griffin are looking for their forever home now 🤎

Her new family shared some lovely updates.

Joan is thriving in her forever home and is now gradually being weaned off her anxiety medication. She’s a truly happy girl who has settled in beautifully with her wonderful family.

We’re overjoyed for sweet Joan, who has been with us since she was just 10 weeks old. Her journey has been long, but we never gave up hope—and seeing her find the loving home she deserves means the world to us.

We’re deeply grateful to everyone who played a part in her story—whether by fostering, sharing her journey, offering encouragement, or supporting rescue efforts. It truly takes a village, and we couldn’t have done it without you.

A note from her new family:
"I have been watching Joan's story since December when a friend of mine sent an email to our work email and asked me if I was in a position to take her on, unfortunately, at that point I was not able to help as I had 2 elderly dogs, one who was also deaf from birth, I always followed her and felt a connection with her.
After my 2 dogs passed which I was devasted about, Joan had still not found her forever home, I then knew I had to reach out, I started fostering her and from the first day I knew, she was our dog. She is the most loving, fun dog and she deserves all the love in the world! She is now enjoying lots of bush walks, beach trips and new friends at the dog parks and learning sign language.
Joan and my partner also have a very special bond, she loves him so much. She will be with us for the rest of her life and never have to worry about anything again ❤️ we are very lucky to have her in our lives - she has found her forever home 🥰".

JOAN UPDATE!

Joan has settled beautifully into her new foster home and is absolutely thriving. She’s already made herself feel completely at ease!

Her new carer is a Veterinary Nurse experienced with deaf dogs, and will be teaching Joan sign language.

Joan now enjoys daily bush walks and adventures, and she lives right near a dog park—perfect for this little social butterfly!

Thank you to everyone who has shared her story and reached out to us! Joan is very special to us 🤍🤍🤍.

These two handsome tabbys are confident, friendly, cuddly. They're dog friendly, cat friendly, child friendly!

If you want to be greeted at the front door, cuddled in your home office or bed and given endless entertainment, you've found your match!

Bonded pairs provide enrichment and entertainment to eachother as well as cuddles and support when you're busy. It means they're less likely to be destructive or overly needy because they always have eachother! We can’t believe Joan is still searching for her forever home!

She’s the sweetest, silliest, goofiest, biggest puppy cuddle muffin you’ll ever meet. Nearly 12 months old, Joan has completed all of her veterinary care and is ready to bring joy to the right family.

Joan is partially blind (yes, she can still see you!) and partially deaf (she hears some frequencies), but don’t let that fool you—she’s incredibly smart and adapts quickly. She loves playing with energetic doggy friends who can keep up with her zoomies! However, Joan isn’t suitable for a home with cats, as she’s a bit too keen on the chase.

She adores walks, beach days, and car rides. Nothing holds her back from living life like any other fun-loving pup.

We do require a foster period before finalizing adoption, just to make sure it’s the perfect fit for both Joan and you. Her happiness, comfort, and safety are our top priorities—because every dog deserves to feel truly loved.

Peter & Griffin are two handsome brothers seeking their forever home. They are confident, cuddly and playful. They love other cats, dogs and kids!

The boys entertain each other and comfort each other as well as enjoying their carers, resident cats and dogs! We recently introduced them to a new kitten foster mate and they have taken her under their wing!

The boys are sterilised, vaccinated, microchipped and up to date with flea and worming. We would love to find a home for the brothers together as a bonded pair.

Keeping the boys together means they will maintain a great relationship with each other, offering endless games and entertainment as only littermates can. They bring out the best in each other!
