🐾Importance of Early Detection & Check Ups 🐾

Early detection can make a huge difference when it comes to arthritis.
The sooner joint changes are identified, the sooner we can develop a management plan to help keep your pet comfortable and active.

Regular health checks allow us to:
✔ Assess mobility and gait
✔ Check for signs of pain or stiffness
✔ Monitor weight and body condition
✔ Discuss treatment and management options
✔ Identify issues before they progress

Many pets show very subtle signs long before arthritis becomes obvious.

If your pet is slowing down, hesitating on stairs, or not enjoying activities they once loved, it may be worth scheduling a check-up.

A simple assessment today could help improve their comfort for years to come. Give us a call or book online!

🐾 June is Arthritis & Joint Health Awareness Month 🐾

As our pets age, changes in their joints can affect their comfort, mobility and quality of life.

Did you know that arthritis is one of the most common chronic conditions seen in older dogs and cats? The challenge is that many pets are very good at hiding pain, meaning the signs can be easy to miss.

Some signs to watch for include:

🐶 Difficulty getting up after resting
🐱 Reluctance to jump onto furniture
🐾 Stiffness, especially in the morning
🐾 Slower walks or reduced activity
🐾 Difficulty climbing stairs
🐾 Changes in behaviour or mood
🐾 Limping or favouring a leg
🐾 Increased sleeping or resting

Many owners assume these changes are simply “old age”, but they may actually be signs of discomfort that can be managed.

Throughout June we’ll be sharing tips on recognising arthritis, supporting joint health, and helping your pet stay comfortable and active.

If you’ve noticed any of these signs in your pet, we’d love to help.

🥣 Feeding Senior Pets 🥣

As pets get older, their nutritional needs can change too!

Did you know pets are considered “senior” from around:
🐶 7 years old (varies by breed)
🐱 7–10 years old for cats

Senior pets may benefit from:
✨ Easily digestible diets
✨ Joint-support ingredients
✨ Controlled calories for healthy weight management
✨ Increased omega-3s for brain & joint health
✨ Dental-friendly food options

Not every “senior” food suits every pet — age, breed, medical conditions, and lifestyle all play a role.

If you’re unsure whether your pet’s diet is still right for them, our team can help guide you ❤️

Some common signs include:
🐶 Sleeping more
🐱 Slowing down or stiffness
👀 Changes in vision or hearing
🥣 Changes in appetite or weight
🚰 Drinking more water
🧠 Behavioral or toileting changes

Dogs and cats age much faster than we do, so regular health checks become increasingly important in their senior years.

🌺 ANZAC DAY 🌺

Today we pause to remember and honour the courage, sacrifice, and mateship of those who served in ANZAC Day.

While we reflect on the bravery of our servicemen and women, we also remember the animals who stood beside them; often without choice, but with unwavering loyalty.

One of the most well-known stories is that of John Simpson Kirkpatrick and his donkey at Gallipoli. Together, they carried wounded soldiers to safety under fire, becoming a symbol of compassion and courage in the face of unimaginable hardship.

But they weren’t alone.
Horses, dogs, pigeons, camels, and donkeys all played vital roles in wartime. They carried supplies, delivered messages, detected danger, and provided comfort when it was needed most.

At Grantham Street Veterinary Clinic, we see every day the quiet loyalty and strength animals bring into our lives — and today, we honour that same spirit in those who served.

🌹 Lest we forget, them all. 🌹

🦟 Fleas: Why They Never Really Go Away 🦟

Perth’s mild climate means fleas don’t get a proper “winter break.”

Even during cooler months, flea eggs and larvae can survive in carpets, bedding, and outdoor areas—waiting for the right conditions to hatch.

Here’s something many pet owners don’t realise:
Only about 5% of fleas live on your pet, while the remaining 95% are in the environment 😬

Even indoor pets can be affected, as fleas and other parasites can easily be brought inside on shoes, clothing, or visitors.

🚨 This is why consistent, ongoing prevention is essential—not just a once-off treatment.

Fleas aren’t always obvious. Signs to watch for include:
• Scratching or biting at the skin
• Scooting
• Weight loss
• Dull coat
• Lethargy

💡 Tips for effective flea control:
🗓️ Use prevention monthly and avoid missed doses
⏱️ Continue treatment for at least 3 months when managing an infestation
🍃 Consider environmental sprays if fleas persist
🧼 Wash pet bedding weekly in hot water
🧹 Vacuum frequently (especially carpets, rugs, and skirting boards)
🐶🐈‍⬛ Treat all pets in the household at the same time

📍 Not sure which prevention is right for your pet? Our Grantham St team can help tailor a plan that works.

🐾 April is Parasite Prevention Month! 🐾

We’re diving into all things fleas, ticks, worms & heartworm. We believe protecting your pet starts with understanding how these parasites actually work 👀

Throughout April, we’ll be breaking down:
🪳 Flea lifecycles (and why they’re so hard to get rid of)
🐛 Worms & how pets become infected
🕷️ Tick risks in everyday environments
🫀 Heartworm & how just ONE mosquito bite can infect your pet

🏡 “But my pet is indoors…”

We hear this ALL the time and we get it! It feels like indoor pets should be safe. But here’s the reality:

➡️ Fleas & Ticks can hitch a ride inside on clothes, shoes, or visitors
➡️ Mosquitoes (which spread heartworm) can easily get indoors
➡️ Parasite eggs + larvae can live in your home environment

💡 That means even fully indoor pets are still at risk.

✨ The goal? Break the cycle before it starts.
Prevention is simple, safe, and far easier than treating an infestation or infection later.

Stay tuned this month as we break it all down in a way that actually makes sense 🙌
