The Warlander Studbook has launched a new ‘mobile friendly’ website.

We would like to thank our members for having (bred or own) so many magnificent Warlander horses who meet the standards. We have used your horses to show newcomers ‘What a Warlander is supposed to look like’ and you can click the link ‘Image captions & Credits’ for the entire site at the bottom of each page.

In particular, our thanks go to Morgan Moore (USA) and her F2 Warlander stallion ‘Inqueito RAM’ who represents the ‘Standard of Excellence’ in Warlander breeding. We hope all will aspire to this standard in every generation.

CHANGES TO THE STUDBOOKS & ADDITIONS TO THE WEBSITE INCLUDE:
The home page gives all of our services including Registration, Online Genealogy, Passport and Internal Assessment all in one click plus ‘must read’ information for newcomers to the Warlander.

The Warlander Main and Auxiliary Appendixes are now just foal and adult. Assessment at three years of age moves horses from foal book to the adult book. We have also introduced mandatory DNA Parental Verification for the progeny of Auxiliary horses.

The Warlander Sport Horse, which WSS developed in 2019, has had a big change with the addition of horses of broken colour and spots (Gypsy, Knabstrupper and Barok Pinto) as well as a working horse category that brings in draft types into the 25% permitted outside blood. The emphasis is on functionality from mid to heavy weight (sport to working horses) who still keep the ‘type and conformation’ of the Warlander.

Our Internal Assessment System now has its own page with an ‘easy to understand’ information package that clearly covers what is required, how to do it and outlines what the judges are looking for.

Our forms and payment page is clearer. All of the forms are new (don’t use old ones from now on) and you can fill in the fields without having to scan anything. Each country has its own forms and payment. Also covered are EU /FEI Passports, DNA Testing Facilities and an offer to BZVKS members in Germany.

The history has been updated with the addition of Holly Zech (USA), Kathi Stewart, Morgan Moore, Deidre Nyburg and Genevieve de Montremare.

At the bottom of the History page is a resource section where you can standards, rules, ratio’s, presentation plus articles covering commonly asked questions. Thank you to Lisa Harders who wrote the first – When to start a Warlander under saddle – the recipe for longevity.

The Breeders page has been upgraded and now all Lifetime Members get a free advertisement on that page.

We have added a FOR SALE section for WSS registered horses which is free to all current members.

And lastly, there is a page devoted to our friends in South America so they can register their horses prior to sale.

The search for my ‘ideal’ horse to train in Classical dressage (high school) began in the late 1980’s leading me to the conclusion that I would need to breed it.

Enter the Friesian and a stunning big stallion from the Tsjalling 235 PREF (Ritske 202 PREF) line that I originally crossed with my thoroughbred dressage mares. Loving the results, I purchased my first Friesian, a stallion Valentino El Domino Classique who was predominantly Age 168 (classic) and Ritske 202 Pref (baroque) lines. Domino lived for 26 years and I trained him to high school.

With his conformation in mind, I looked for a complimentary breed that could improve the ride ability and form. There began my love for the Andalusian and I purchased several mares one of which I bred to him.

In 1990, I started to write my breed standard of my ideal horse. I called it the Warlander.

It had to have the docility of the old style Friesian, the willingness and athleticism of the Andalusian - a baroque horse in type, ideally around 15.3hh, round with good bone, a flowing topline with an elevated well set neck with plenty of room at the throat and poll. A horse that could collect effortlessly and gave a Rolls Royce smooth ride.

The first born Warlander, Dominador CS lived up to expectations.
For over 30 years I have selectively bred all three breeds and their results include several successful international competitors (World Cup), show titles in breed and ridden and the mounts of the lead actors and children in many international movies and television series.

I work full time as a Publisher and write and edit a long established monthly magazine, manage and do the registrations for WSS and in-between that study Law, Classical Equitation, do humanitarian work and run my horse stud.

I am grateful to all the people who have been a part of the Warlander journey past and present and am excited for the future with the much needed clear direction of the studbook.

Lisa Oberman – USA
WSS Global Council

The Warlander Studbook Society (WSS) is proud to have Lisa Oberman from the USA on our Global Council. Lisa has long been a part of the Warlander journey and since 2016 has been instrumental in establishing the future of the Warlander horse in North America.

Lisa has connected WSS with the people who have many of the best Warlander horses in the USA. These horses have joined WSS ranks alongside those already registered in the world’s first Warlander Studbook (IWSR- USA) which has given North America a great start.

Now in 2022, as the North American WSS affiliate body opens WSS looks back on this journey and is grateful for Lisa’s help, support and publicity of the Warlander horse in her country.

Many of the USA horses are regarded as the finest examples in the world.

Lisa knows what a good horse looks like. She and her husband own of some of North America’s most stunning PRE (Distino, Flamenca and Sereno) and two Friesian stallions both sired by the legendary TDR Sjoerd - TDR Validus and TDR Victorius affectionately known as the ‘the ‘V’s’.

“I have loved and owned horses my whole life, says Lisa”.

“I fell in love with Andalusian and Friesian horses in 1992 and that’s when my husband and I became owners.

“We turned our love of these breeds into a business called El Sueno Espanol – providing and creating custom tack for baroque horses,” says Lisa.

Lisa is humble, but the quality of her artisanal custom horse tack is world class. She is also the owner and Global Distributor of a horse feed Supplement Company – a product she had been using herself for 25 years prior.

“I love the Warlander horse because, if bred properly creates a magnificent horse with the best of both breeds. This is why the Warlander Studbook Society is very important - to ensure proper breeding for quality horses.

My husband Phil always wanted a Friesian to train for Jousting and I always wanted a purebred Iberian. We met in the middle and our desire to breed the Warlander started from there. We are both passionate about baroque breeds that would make ideal jousting steeds – and we believe the Warlander is suitable for this discipline. But at the end of the day, we love them all but the Warlander is truly the ‘best of both worlds’.
I have been breeding Warlander horses since 2010 and we live at Kryal Castle in Victoria, Australia. We hold events at the castle for baroque breeds with classes for the Warlander as well as Jousting Tournaments and more. In the future, we will be hosting the Victorian Keuring for Warlander horses.
The future of the Warlander is a positive one not only in Australia but globally. The recent WSS revision sets a fair and much needed standard for the breed.
For my day job, I am a ‘Jill of all trades‘ as we all [Phil and my daughter Mieka] live at the castle; but my main job is running our Retail Shop and Horse Stud.
I have imported several Lusitano horses in order to further our Iberian and Warlander breeding program We started our stud with three foundation Andalusian mares and are now watching their second and third generations’ develop with their new owners. It has been a long and rewarding journey and we are happy to be part of the Warlander horse’s future.

I learned about the Warlander as a specific breed, when my favourite Friesian mare was halfway through her pregnancy with my firstborn Warlander ‘Anubis von Greenhorn’. So I actually had the idea of crossbreeding Friesian to Iberian all by myself, but I was very happy to find out I was not the only one with this dream.

I started breeding Warlander in 2008, including F2 and produced the world’s first officially keured Warlander stallion who went on to sire many ‘Premium predicate’ foals. I am still thrilled with their willing natures, imposing appearance and stunning gaits.

The goal for WSS and breeders is to take greater aim at producing ‘quality bred’ Warlander horses. Breeding should be about quality – not quantity and adherence to the breed standard. Breeding quality purebred horses is already a task, and producing a crossbred is even tougher especially when producing further generations who meet the standards.

The new WSS Internal Assessment System now makes it mandatory for horses to pass in order to receive breeding approval and this sets the Warlander globally on the right path for future high standards.

For my day job I am an engineering drafter and privately, I run a small horse breeding farm with the help of my family.

In 2010, I initiated for the Warlander to become a recognized breed within Europe, with the German ‘BZVKS’. I have worked with WSS for over a decade ensuring European Guidelines and standards are incorporated and I run the Warlander Online Genealogy which has been in place since 2013.

Introduction

“My first encounter with a Warlander was at an IALHA show in Lexington, Va. She was perfect – and I have since bred a few and started two under saddle.

The Warlander is the perfect blend of the intelligent, but not always energetic Friesian and the willing but sensitive ‘energizer bunny’ Iberian. Having worked with just about every breed in many disciplines – the Warlander is my ultimate horse.

I see the Warlander increasing in popularity and now with the new WSS Revision system - quality will be kept high.

For my day time job, I board, train and breed horses and have developed a specialist horse feed which I am now marketing nationally.

After 40 plus years of training and 50 years of riding all variety of horses, I understand how different types of horses and movement feel as well as which conformation faults are cosmetic compared to those which set a horse up for a lifetime of issues. Trends will come and go; however, a well built, well-tempered horse will always be in demand.

My experiences with Studbooks and Registries has often left me disgruntled and with this experience under my belt I aim to make the North American affiliate of the Warlander Studbook Society something members can be proud and enthusiastic about joining and supporting.

We will be establishing year end awards and recognition with national governing bodies in North America such as the United States Equestrian Federation and the United States Dressage Federation to support Warlander owners who compete.

The Warlander Studbook Society has received an overwhelming positive response worldwide to our new Revision and Internal Assessment System. It is great to have positive and proactive people on board who truly want the best for the Warlander Horses future.

“As a dedicated breeder, I am going to offer to pay for all my eligible Warlander babies to be revised through the new WSS Internal Assessment System for their owners over the next couple of years.
I am so excited for this new Assessment System and thank you to the Warlander Studbook Society for developing and working hard to improve this breed so much. I just love this registry.

Warlander Studbook Society Third Revision (2022) has now been completed and you can view New Appendix system at http://warlanderstudbooksociety.com.au/registering-warlander/

IN BRIEF: The Studbook is tasked with the improvement of breed standards worldwide. We also have a ‘Duty of Care’ to potential purchasers of Warlander horses. Whilst there are many beautifully bred horses WSS would like to reward, WSS also knows that registration is not a reflection quality or adherence to Breed Standard.

Notable changes are:

PHOTOGRAPHS - Are now mandatory for all registrations. These images appear on the horse’s papers as well as the Online Genealogy. There are no exceptions to this rule. (See Internal Assessment Program for photo requirements which can be downloaded from the above link as well as http://warlanderstudbooksociety.com.au/forms-payment/)

FOAL BOOK APPENDIXES - All horses, regardless of age will now be registered in their appropriate Foal Book at the point of registration.

INTERNAL ASSESSMENT - At three years of age (30 months), Foal Book horses can be internally assessed by the Studbook (via video and photograph) and those who pass will move upwards through the Studbook (through the Appendixes or to Main Studbook).
The Assessments are performed by a team of Qualified Judges and Experts. The Assessments are anonymous and transparent. The Assessors (3) only know the age and s*x of the horse and not where it resides nor the owner.
Upon completion, the owner is given the final score (averaged over three Assessors) and if it is a Pass will receive ‘new’ Warlander papers showing the results (Premiums, Breeding Approval etc.). These results will be added to the Online Genealogy including the Appendix status.
If the horse ‘fails’ it will remain in the Appendix it was originally registered in and this will be documented on its papers and the WSS Online Genealogy . Horses who fail can be assessed again.

PREMIUMS and BREEDING APPROVAL - Horses who pass Assessment can receive Gold, Silver and Bronze Premiums as well as Basic and Qualified (stallions) Breeding Approval.

CURRENT REGISTERED HORSES - All horses registered in the Studbook to this date retain their current standings and can also be assessed for premiums and awards.

TRANSPARENCY AND CONSUMER PROTECTION - All of the information on horses collated over time from Assessments (and published online) will give consumers a valuable tool in order to make informed purchasing decisions.

These changes bring WSS more in line with the Base Breed Registration requirements.
