🐢🌍 International Turtle Day at FPTA! 🐾🎾
Last month at Future Proof Training Academy, we threw a shell-abration like no other — and our daycare dogs loved every second of it!

A family of turtles took a slow and steady stroll through our play zones, giving our curious canines a chance to observe, engage, and enjoy a brand-new enrichment experience. 🐢👀🐶

💡 Why do we do this?
Novel experiences like these spark curiosity, boost emotional regulation, and help dogs learn how to engage with the world calmly and respectfully — all while having a blast!

The day was filled with:

🍖 Reinforcers – The Power Behind Good Behaviour! 🐶✨
What makes your dog’s tail wag? The right reinforcer! Whether it’s food, toys, or praise, reinforcing behaviours helps your pup learn faster and stay motivated. 🐕🎯

✅ What Are Reinforcers?
They’re anything your dog values that you use to reward and strengthen positive behaviour! The right reinforcer makes training more fun and effective!

✅ Types of Reinforcers We Use:
1️⃣ Food Rewards – High-value treats (like cheese or chicken) for quick motivation!
2️⃣ Toys – Use favourite toys to reward play, especially for active dogs!
3️⃣ Praise & Affection – Verbal praise and pats work great for dogs who love attention!
4️⃣ Playtime – Engage your dog in a short game of tug or fetch after they perform a behaviour.
5️⃣ Life Rewards – Everyday joys (like sniffing or meeting new people) can be used as rewards, especially for experienced dogs.

✅ How We Use Reinforcers in Training:
1️⃣ Timing is Key – Reward immediately when the dog does the right behaviour to make the connection clear!
2️⃣ Vary Your Reinforcers – Keep things fresh by switching between food, toys, and praise.
3️⃣ Use High-Value Reinforcers for Difficult Behaviours – Save the special treats for the big stuff!
4️⃣ Gradually Fade Food Rewards – Start with food, then move towards other reinforcers as your dog learns the behaviour.

🎉🐾 Birthday Week at FPTA! 🐾🎉
Last week was all about cake, cuddles, and confetti as we celebrated the birthdays of our incredible directors — Liam & Tara! 🎂💚

Our daycare dogs joined the paw-ty with tail wags, party hats, and of course… treats all around! 🍰🐶 Because let’s be honest — if there’s a celebration happening, our pups are definitely getting involved. 😄🎈

Liam and Tara are the heart of FPTA, and the love they pour into every dog (and every human!) doesn’t go unnoticed. It was only right that we flipped the script for once and showed them just how appreciated they are — with furry hugs, birthday balloons, and a whole lot of joy.

🧠🐾 Thursday Enrichment Time — Taylor’s Sunday Roast Kong Edition! 🐾🧠

This week, enrichment went gourmet thanks to our very own foodie, Taylor, who served up a Kong recipe inspired by a classic Sunday roast 🍽️🐶

✨ What’s on the (dog-friendly) menu?
🥕 Steamed veg
🍗 Juicy meat pieces
🎃 Creamy pumpkin
🍪 Crunchy biscuits for that final crunch!

And who got the first taste test? The ever-elegant Ella, of course! 😍
She sniffed, chewed, and carefully licked every last morsel like the queen she is 👑

🎯 The Training Quadrants – Understanding How Dogs Learn! 🐶✨

Dog training isn’t just about “good” or “bad” behaviour—it’s about how behaviours are reinforced or reduced! Knowing the Four Quadrants of Learning helps us train in a way that’s effective, ethical, and science-based! 🐕💡

✅ What Are the Four Training Quadrants?
They describe how consequences shape behaviour:

1️⃣ ✅ Positive Reinforcement (R+): Adding something the dog loves (treats, toys, praise) to increase a behaviour.
👉 Example: Giving a treat for sitting = more sits!

2️⃣ ❌ Negative Reinforcement (R-): Removing something unpleasant to increase a behaviour.
👉 Example: Releasing leash pressure when a dog walks nicely.

3️⃣ ❌ Positive Punishment (P+): Adding something unpleasant to decrease a behaviour.
👉 Example: A leash correction or smacking dog for jumping

4️⃣ ✅ Negative Punishment (P-): Removing something desirable to decrease a behaviour.
👉 Example: Turning away when a dog jumps to remove attention.

✅ How We Use This in Training:
🐾 We focus on Positive Reinforcement (R+) for ethical, effective learning.
🐾 We use Negative Punishment (P-) thoughtfully (e.g., removing attention for unwanted behaviours).
🐾 We avoid harsh corrections—fear doesn’t teach, it shuts dogs down!
