If you’ve just welcomed a new puppy into your household (or are planning to), it is an exciting time. It can also be quite overwhelming, because there are a lot of things to think about: nutrition, toilet training, socialisation and behaviour, playtime and toys, parasite control, vet visits, and so on.

I will touch on grooming and why it is important to start early with introducing your puppy to grooming and all its facets.

As a mobile vet nurse / dog groomer, I enter your private property, which can be perceived as quite intrusive for a dog. To them, I am a strange person, entering their home and with me I bring a huge trailer with a plethora of new (doggy) smells and loud noises. On top of that, I enter their personal space, by handling and touching them in order to check their ears and nails, wet them down with a hose to be able to wash them and use a loud blow dryer to dry them off. You can imagine that this can be a lot to ask of a dog.

When you have a puppy or are considering one, take into account their breed / coat and the amount of grooming this type of dog will need in the future. Does this particular dog need clipping or deshedding in the future? If so, start training and desensitising early.

You can start training a puppy for grooming when they are up to date with their vaccinations and around 12 to 14 weeks of age. The ability to easily form positive associations with new experiences decrease dramatically after four months of age.

You can ask your groomer if they use positive reinforcement to teach your puppy to get used to being handled (for grooming, nail clipping, ear cleaning, etcetera). Ensure your groomer takes things slowly and uses positive reinforcement only. If a groomer is Fear Free Certified, this is also a good sign, as this means that they are trained to pick up on signs of stress in your dog and minimise any potential fear.

So, start training early. Positive reinforcement will make the difference between a super stressful grooming experience or a pampering, enjoyable one.

It’s little things like this, that make me so happy and make me count my blessings.

Thank you to all my wonderful clients and all their animals! 🙏🫶

“Monique has been bathing my 3 dogs for a few years now. Over the years Monique has advised us when the dogs have had a rash or any other ailment. Just recently my youngest dog developed a lump in just a few days on her leg. We were monitoring it. Monique advised us to take her to the Vet. My faith in Monique led us to take our dog to the Vet the next morning. Our dog was in surgery that day. Our dog had Mast Cell Tumours of low grade. We cannot thank Monique enough for her expertise and the love and care that she has for our fur babies. I have told Monique the outcome and her response was she will be putting extra eyes on our dog. You could not ask for a better service than that. She goes over and beyond a dog bath. And my dogs get excited to see her another plus for us knowing they are in safe caring hands. Thank you Monique for your outstanding service and advice”.
